Title: His Taken Omega (Mountain Shifters #11)

Author: L.C. Davis

Publisher: Self-Published

Cover Artist: Wolf Conan

Release Date: December 3, 2017

Length: 70 000 words/260 pages

Genre/s: M/M shifter Mpreg romance

His Taken Omega is a standalone story within the Mountain Shifter universe.

 Blurb

Nicholas wants nothing to do with omegas, and Avery has already signed a contract binding him to another Alpha. Fate has other plans for them both.

As the omega spokesman for the infamous Futurus Initiative, Avery Callahan is a controversial figure who’s used to being envied, occasionally despised and always the center of attention. His kidnapping at the hands of the twisted omega at the helm of the radical anti-Futurus group known as Epsilon shook his perfect world to the core, and Avery’s abnormally conventional parents no longer know what to do with him. In a last-ditch effort to save their son’s reputation—and his engagement to a prestigious politician—the Callahans send him to the small, idyllic pack of Southbend for some much-needed rest and recovery.

When Avery arrives in Southbend, he finds the Meyer household anything but welcoming and he immediately clashes with the rakishly reluctant head of the household. Nicholas might be a brilliant lawyer with good looks and charm in abundance, but he makes no secret of the fact that Avery is persona non-grata in his pack. How is Avery supposed to heal his own wounds when an Alpha who looks at every omega with disdain makes him question everything, including his participation in the breeding program he’s devoted his life to promoting?

~

Nicholas has it all on the surface—rising-star status as an attorney with his own practice, a sizable inheritance and the option of going home with any omega he chooses at the end of the night—but beneath the mask of his status, he hides a secret that makes him feel unworthy of the title of Alpha. Past abuse has left him with a deep-seated revulsion towards omegas, the very class of shifter he’s supposed to crave. He uses work and meaningless flings with other Alphas and betas to distract himself from the family life he

doesn’t believe he deserves, but in the wake of his estranged father’s death, Nicholas is called home to take on a role he never wanted.

Forced to give up his high-profile career and take the reins of his family’s pack, Nicholas finds himself wholly unprepared to fill the shoes of the man he hated. Because fate isn’t cruel enough, the Spirits choose this moment to send him his destined mate—a charming yet infuriatingly stubborn omega he can never love or even claim. At least, that’s what he thinks until he realizes that the very traits that repel him from other omegas draw him to Avery in a way he finds as bewildering as it is intoxicating.

Excerpt 2

“Well,” Nicholas said, coming to a stop in the middle of the town square. “This is the great metropolis of Southbend. What do you think?”

“I think it’s lovely,” Avery said, hesitating. “And very, very rural.”

“It is certainly that.” Nicholas grinned. “Should we head back? You must be tired after your trip.”

“I am,” Avery admitted, falling into step beside him. “Guess I am here to relax.”

“That’s what I heard.”

“What else have you heard?”

Nicholas wasn’t sure how to respond. Avery gave him a knowing look.

“You can be honest. You won’t hurt my feelings.”

“It’s nothing bad, if that’s what you’re thinking.”

“I guess that depends on whether you consider the public face of the Futurus Initiative having a nervous breakdown in the middle of a fundraiser to be a bad thing.”

“Everyone knows what you went through. You’re a hero. If they’d judge you for that, they’re not worth the time.”

“It’s been three months,” Avery murmured.

“Three months is barely enough time to enjoy summer break, let alone get over being kidnapped.”

“Maybe you can tell my parents that. They’re convinced I’m irreparably broken.”

“You don’t look broken to me.” Nicholas pretended to look the omega over for damage. “Maybe a small dent right here,” he said, poking the dimple on Avery’s cheek that deepened when he smiled.

“Either way, it looks like I’m stuck here until I can convince my parents of that.”

“That makes two of us. For what it’s worth, it’ll be nice to have the company.”

Another lie, but at least this one was for a worthy cause. It wasn’t Avery’s fault that an Alpha with an irrational aversion to omegas—or at least intimacy with one—had imprinted on him.

Avery was there to recover, not to find a mate when he already had one. The more Nicholas reminded himself of that, the better. His aversion had kept him single into his early thirties, so surely he could manage to control the hormones and irrational impulses for the few weeks Avery would be staying with them. Once he went back, both of their problems would be solved. Avery could go back to his life as the Futurus golden boy, and Nicholas could sleep a little easier knowing that he wasn’t going to imprint on the next omega who walked into his office looking for help.

In the meantime, he just had to fight the urge to commit the greatest sin of his profession: telling the truth.

Excerpt 1

“You look especially nice tonight,” Hayley said in a tone that was half-accusatory and half-amused as she leaned in Nicholas’s doorway.

The Alpha scowled. He wasn’t thrilled about the fact that his baby sister was about to be surrounded by single Alphas, most of whom he had already deemed too old for her, especially since his attention during the party would be divided between Avery and his new alliance. His father would have put his foot down about such an appearance until Hayley was old enough to take a mate, at the very least. Her wellbeing was one of the few subjects on which the late Alpha and his son had ever agreed, but their mother had other ideas. Sometimes Nicholas thought she’d be happy to send Hayley away immediately, as long as the marriage proved beneficial to the family.

“Doesn’t that dress come with a shawl?”

“It’s eighty degrees outside and there is nothing wrong with my dress,” she said flatly. “Who are you trying to impress with your hair slicked back like that, Avery or the other Alphas?”

“You should know the answer to that,” he muttered, closing the door behind him as he left the room. “I expect you to be on good behavior tonight.”

“Someone has to be. Let’s just hope Myron doesn’t go overboard on the wine again.”

Nicholas sighed. “If it’s not him, it’ll be mom. Let me worry about them, you just have fun.” He frowned. “Actually, I take that back… who are you going with again?”

“My friend, Shaina,” she said with a sigh, letting him lead her downstairs by the arm.

“You say that like it’s supposed to comfort me. She’s still an Alpha, last I checked.”

“If only everyone else knew the great, unflappable Nicholas Meyer frets endlessly over his little sister,” she teased. “You might seem almost human.”

“Can’t have that now, can we?”

He stopped at the bottom of the stairs as Hayley gathered the hem of her gown so she wouldn’t trip, and when he looked up, the sight of Avery waiting by the door nearly tripped him. The omega was dressed in an elegant white suit, his dark curls falling freely over the fine silk. He looked the way Nicholas had always imagined an angel might, even if he turned into a devil the moment he opened his mouth.

Hayley leaned in and whispered, “Pick your jaw up off the floor and escort your date, big brother.”

Nicholas cleared his throat of the cluster of frogs that seemed to have lodged in it and walked over to Avery. “You look…” Was there a word for it? Certainly not one that would allow him to keep his facade of apathy intact. He settled for, “nice.”

“Careful, I might get a superiority complex. As an omega, I’m already prone to those,” Avery said in that dry tone that was so much sweeter than any other omega’s attempt at being sultry.

Nicholas had hoped that by being cold towards his guest, he would be able to overcome his innate attraction to him, but he was starting to fear he was just developing a thing for snark.

A COWBOY FOR CALEB BLURB

Falling for his deceased twin brother’s mate was never part of Dustin’s plan.

This midwestern Alpha might be a little rough around the edges, but he lives by a few simple principles and honor is chief among them.

Nonetheless, when tragedy strikes the Meadowlands Pack, Dustin feels he has no choice but to bring his twin’s mate home to take care of him. The only problem is, Caleb isn’t anything like Dustin expected of the city omega who stole his brother’s heart and divided their family.

What starts out as trying to do the right thing soon becomes a blurry series of complicated decisions that lead Dustin further away from the path he’s always followed—and further into the arms of the one omega he was never supposed to want.

Caleb has been through the worst a mated omega could fear. He’s lost his mate and their unborn child, and now he finds himself at the mercy of an Alpha who has every reason to hate him.

Despite being twins, Dustin and Caleb’s former mate, Alec, are nothing alike. Caleb wants nothing more than to please his new Alpha and secure his position in the pack, but Dustin seems to take everything he says the wrong way.

As forbidden tensions mount between Alpha and omega, Caleb begins to fear that Dustin will start taking his developing interest the right way.

Excerpt

Dustin hadn’t been prepared for Caleb to take him up on his offer to stay and help him through his heat, even though he’d made it in all sincerity. He moved a bit closer, and the moment his hands made contact with Caleb’s skin, he knew he’d bitten off more than he could chew. He tried desperately to focus on the nonsensical plot of the movie, but the more he touched Caleb and the more he felt the omega’s tight muscles relax under his attention, the harder it was to think at all.

After all, some things didn’t require a whole lot of brain power. Instinct was more than enough. It was reining in those instincts that posed the real challenge.

The soft moan that passed Caleb’s lips was the thing that caved Dustin in all at once. The omega arched his back and leaned into Dustin’s touch, their pheromones mingling together in perfect harmony, as if their bodies had already decided how the night was going to go.

“That feels so good,” Caleb breathed.

“Good,” Dustin growled. He hoped Caleb would assume he was just hoarse and not angry, but knowing the Alpha’s voice was just rough with desire was probably even worse. “You’re tense.”

Caleb froze and looked over his shoulder. His eyes were dark and heavy with lust, and if there was any doubt in Dustin’s mind that the attraction he felt was a two-way street, it was gone now. Caleb turned slowly, and before Dustin could fully process what he was doing, the omega had slipped his arms around Dustin’s neck. His fingertips grazed Dustin’s skin, raising goosebumps all over his flesh.

“I know this is wrong,” Caleb said, his voice soft and husky but full of guilt. He wouldn’t meet Dustin’s eyes, which was just as well. The Alpha knew once he did, all bets were off. He wouldn’t be able to keep the truth inside any longer. “But I — I’m just so tired of feeling alone,” he whispered, tears slipping down his cheeks.

“You’re not alone,” Dustin assured him, stroking Caleb’s cheek. “I know I haven’t been there for you the way I should have. I’m just so afraid of making a mistake. Of giving in to the way I feel about you, and leading us into something we’ll both regret.”

“How do you feel?” Caleb asked, finally meeting his eyes. His gaze was searching, needful.

Dustin swallowed hard. “I think you know by this point. I’m pretty bad at hiding it, but God knows I’ve tried.”

Caleb gave him a small, rueful smile. “Maybe I’ve just been afraid to see it. Afraid that you’ll realize I feel the same way.”

“You don’t,” Dustin said, coming back to himself for a split second. He hoped it was enough. “You’re in heat.”

Caleb laughed. It was a soft, regretful sound. “I wish I could blame it on that. Maybe then I could sleep at night without feeling like such a horrible person.”

“You’re not a horrible person.” Dustin’s thumb swept across Caleb’s lips. They were so soft. How had he gone this long without kissing them? Without touching him…? “You’re the most beautiful person I’ve ever met.”

The omega’s lips found his. This was it. This was the point of no return. If he crossed that line, if he returned the kiss, it was all over. He could no longer lay even a technical claim to goodness if he tasted the forbidden fruit and took more off the vine, but he had never felt quite as weak—or as strong—as he did with the omega in his arms.

In the end, the satin sin of Caleb’s lips brushing against his own was just too much. Dustin took the omega into his arms and his tongue slipped in past Caleb’s parted lips, taking the reins of control the way he’d always wanted. In all his wildest dreams—and Caleb had been the subject of plenty—he had never imagined giving in to temptation could taste so sweet.

Excerpt

If it wasn’t for me, he’d still be here.

The omega’s words were still echoing in Dustin’s memory as he taped up another box. He stacked it on top of the growing pile accumulating by the wall in the cozy apartment Alec and Caleb had shared. Dustin knew for a fact that his brother’s eye for design and homemaking was every bit as poor as his own, so the charming atmosphere had to be all the omega’s doing.

The place still smelled like Alec. Despite all the teasing Dustin had given his brother about smelling like the stables, that scent was at once comforting and heart wrenching. It filled him with nostalgia and memories, and in combination with the artifacts that were still left out from Alec’s last day of living, it was all too much.

Since Dustin had been raised with the firm belief that Andrews men didn’t cry, he’d put all of his emotional energy into packing. While he’d meant only to pack up the things Caleb would need to settle comfortably into the Meadowlands Pack, he’d ended up packing half the damn apartment in his attempt to put off returning to the hospital.

The moment he’d gotten into his rental car, all the right words had come flooding to the surface of Dustin’s mind. He should have said so many things that just wouldn’t come to him at the time. At the very least, he should have told the omega that it wasn’t his fault Alec had been killed by a distracted driver or that the bridge hadn’t been properly treated or that the baby hadn’t been strong enough to make it. The only thing he could do for his brother now was to take care of the mate he’d left behind, and he was already doing a hell of a job bungling that.

To be fair, he wasn’t sure any Alpha would be at his sharpest when he’d just imprinted on his dead brother’s mate. Nothing about that day had gone as planned.

Dustin decided to just be grateful that shock hadn’t made him say anything to tip the omega off to the truth. He’d come so close, but something had held him back. Perhaps the last lick of sense rattling around in his empty skull. The last damn thing Caleb needed after losing his mate and miscarrying their child was to find out some Alpha he’d never even met from halfway across the country had imprinted on him. Especially not Dustin.
