They’re bond-mates. They’re rivals.

Only one of them can take the prize…may the best wolf win.

Blurb

They’re bond-mates. They’re rivals. Only one of them can take the prize…may the best wolf win.

Alpha Zach Logan is taking part in the Top Dog survival challenge to secure his billion-dollar inheritance. The odds are in his favor. He has awakened his latent wolf, becoming the first verified shifter in over a century; no way can he lose. But his biggest rival is also his bond-mate, the omega he’s destined to spend the rest of his life with. Can Zach keep their conflict from spilling over into the bedroom?

Omega Sebastian Gage came to the Island to win. That trophy is his, and he will fight anyone for it. Yes, including his bond-mate, who is smart and generous and doesn’t deserve to lose. But them’s the breaks, because Sebastian needs this win to free himself from unjust suppressed shifter laws that limit omega rights.

The Island isn’t a tame playground, however, and not every competitor plays fair. Will the deadly game tear Zach and Sebastian’s fragile bond apart, or will love come out on top?

Bonded is Book 2 of the steamy paranormal m/m romance series Latent. If you like high stakes, sizzling chemistry and fiercely protective shifters, you’ll love Alana Timms’s wild adventure.

Bonded is best read after Fever, Book 1 of the Latent series. Unresolved plot elements make this story’s strong HFN ending a cliffhanger. Themes include hurt/comfort, pack dynamics, fated mates and rivals-to-lovers. Bonded contains adult material and is not intended for audiences under 18. Includes steamy scenes, strong language, violence and minor character death.

Outside on the deck, Sebastian set the table with a crisp white table cloth, glasses, and silverware. Table for two under a waxing moon. He lit a couple of candles, placing each in a candle lantern.

Too much? Kill the candles?

Too late; Zach came into sight carrying his backpack and shopping bags. He swept his gaze over Sebastian. Then looked him over again, slower, eating him up. Sebastian shivered; he couldn’t hold the ocean breeze responsible for it. Not when his pulse raced as well. Zach dumped the bags, and prowled onto the deck. He fucking prowled, telegraphing his X-rated thoughts through a subtle change in his scent and the fierce intent in his darkened gaze.

“You look good,” said Zach.

His voice was laced with gravel; a near-growl that pitched Sebastian into full-blown lust. His stiffening dick pushed at the front panel of his kilt. His hole clenched hard around the butt-plug, wild for the real thing.

“Thanks?” Sebastian heard it, the uncertainty as though he were asking a question. He injected more authority into his voice. “You too. I like the haircut.”

Zach smiled. His dimples told a lie. Cute, they said, adorable.

Yeah, same way a tiger was adorable. Zach’s aura pulsated with barely leashed power. Raw and intoxicating, it put a dent in Sebastian’s authority. He hated this shift in their dynamics. But he loved how hot Zach made him feel.

“You’ve been busy,” said Zach, stopping within kissing distance.

So why weren’t they doing that, kissing? He couldn’t think of a good reason why Zach’s tongue wasn’t in his mouth. “Busy? You mean the table?”

“I mean busy claiming points for nailing my ass.”

He was supposed to feel guilty, but that was difficult to do given the memory of him fucking Zach through the jungle floor. “Oh, that.”

“Yeah, we’re not doing that anymore.”

A flare of panic. “What, nailing your ass?”

“Sex points.” Zach grabbed his hips and walked him backwards across the deck until his back hit the wall. “We’re not claiming points for sex anymore, Sebastian.”

Wedged between a wall and a hard Zach, staying on topic was becoming a real problem. He curled his hands on Zach’s shoulders, his fingers twitching as a tide of sensation swept through him from Zach.

“It’s the rules, Zach. We have to put in claims for all transactions.”

A muscle ticked in Zach’s jaw. He exhaled with force. “Apart from intimate ones, those are ours. They’re between me and you. Not between you, me, and the Auditors.”

Intimate was exactly it. A tide of intimacy flowing between them. He’d swear it was the bond creating new pathways, opening them up to each other. He bent his head a little to line his mouth up with Zach’s.

Zach kissed him softly, taking such infinite care that Sebastian lost his breath.

“How much for that, Seb? Ten points, a hundred? How about this?” Zach asked, and kissed him again.

No softness this time. Zach took what he wanted with the demanding sweep of his tongue. Sebastian let him in on a throaty moan, basking in pleasure. And sighing in frustration when Zach pulled back.

“Answer me. How many points?”

He tipped his head back to rest it against the wall, all kinds of turned on by Zach’s commanding tone. “I get it, all right? Points are stupid. But can we just play the game like it’s supposed to be played? Please?”

“It’s none of their business what goes on between us, Seb.”

He recognized stubborn when he saw it. Zach wouldn’t budge on this. But neither would he, because he wasn’t about to risk getting fined for flouting the rules.

“A foot race,” he said. “I win, we forget this conversation ever happened. You win, we quit claiming sex points.”

Zach cocked his head. “You’re challenging me?”

“Yes, I am.”

Zach’s eyes flashed, his smile wolfish. “Challenge accepted.”

His own wolf stirred at the flashing eyes: tread carefully. But there was no risk involved here, was there? He could break free of Zach’s grip on his hips any time he wanted.

What he wanted were more kisses.

There’s no such thing as fairytales—until there’s a happily ever after.

Blurb

There’s no such thing as fairytales—until there’s a happily ever after.

When mob boss Nico Drakos dies, his son, omega Zane, knows the time is ripe for change. Just because all the mob’s business dealings have always been illegal, that doesn’t mean they need to stay that way. Zane is well-loved by everyone, and the council is ready to follow him wherever he might lead them. Time to put his business degree to work! The only person that stands in his way is his father’s second-in-command, Donovan Morelli.

Alpha Blaze was practically raised by the mob, groomed and trained to follow orders, no matter how dark. But, seething with jealousy, Donovan gives Blaze a command. One he can’t refuse. While Blaze keeps a wary eye on Zane, he falls under the omega’s spell. Then the alpha does the unthinkable. He defies his order.

Zane needs a safe place to hole up, but he doesn’t give a damn about his surroundings because the alpha everyone considers a bad apple lights a fire in his heart, one Zane is powerless to extinguish. With a memorable cast of supporting characters, this classic fairytale gets a modern mpreg twist.

For fans of alphas and omegas who give everything to be with the one who they love, this first book in Colbie Dunbar and Trisha Linde’s Once Upon An M/M Romance series checks all the boxes. It includes an alpha and omega who refuse to be defined by their past; seven men and women with whimsical quirks whose fierce loyalty to Zane earns them a place in his heart; plus a baby who arrives safely, despite the odds.

And while there is no once upon a time, they do live happily ever after.

Chapter 3

Zane

I studied the man on my doorstep. He seemed kinda familiar and his scent washed over me, reminding me of coffee and something else I couldn’t pinpoint. Why? He smelt nothing like a good brew. One of Sam’s co-workers, I guessed.

I was disappointed and hoped my favorite delivery man hadn’t been fired or taken another job because I didn’t fancy this creep on my doorstep every time I craved a taco or quesadilla.

I made to grab the bag and hand over the tip, but the guy held on tight to the food. That’s my dinner! My right hand crept to my pocket as I asked, “Is there a problem?”

He nodded and his muffled voice said, “Payment didn’t go through.” He shrugged. “Gremlins in the app.”

Seriously? Gremlins? No hit man I’d ever met—and I hated that I’d made the acquaintance of more than one— ever talked like that. Tension released from my body as the guy held up his phone showing what I owed. “Okay. I’ll get the money.”

I was searching for my wallet, tossing cushions across the room and swearing, when an aroma that commanded attention struck me in the face and had the hair on the back of my neck standing up.

A pair of boots appeared in my line of vision, and I reared away. “Fuck me sideways with a broomstick!” The words exploded from my lips. I’d never seriously considered having someone order a hit on me, but faced with potential death, my pulse sped up and my mouth became dry.

Seconds passed, but time stretched out and it seemed like hours. It was as though everything was moving in slow motion. The grandfather clock ticked in the corner and dust particles floated past my head as my trembling fingers reached for the gun.

The intruder cocked his head. “Wouldn’t a broomstick be painful? Not a place you want to get a splinter. Ouch!” He put his hands on his hips.

I froze. Who is this guy? Air whooshed out of my mouth and I took a moment to compose myself. “You scared me. What in the hell are you doing barging into my house?”

“You said you’d get the money.” His voice was echoing in that stupid helmet.

“You must be new. Or been raised by wolves.” Come to think of it, wolves would have taught him better manners.

“Hey! What’s that supposed to mean?”

I rubbed my forehead, convinced I’d aged ten years in the last few minutes. “Nothing. But next time, wait at the door.” I shoved a fistful of bills in his palm and curled his fingers around them. And that was my first mistake. One of many.

Skin to skin. My breath fogging his visor. The warmth of his hand seeped into mine and a tingling sensation spread over my body.

I should have let go.

I should have taken a step back.

I should have shoved him out the door and complained to the restaurant owner about the lousy service.

But I did none of those things. I didn’t move and neither did he. If this was his first day on the job, he might think all his customers held his hand. Poor guy. I pulled away and he made a strangled sound. It was hard to tell with that stupid helmet. “You okay?” If he was choking, I could give him mouth-to-mouth.

He bobbed his head.

“I’m Zane.”

He mumbled something.

“Hayes?”

More gibberish.

“Rays?” Were there two of them? Ray One and Ray Two?

“No.”

Okay, I heard that loud and clear. “Take off that thing, please. If you’re going to be bringing my dinner a couple of times a week, we should introduce ourselves.”

Chapter One

Campbell

My time for a family had finally come. For days, the scent of my fated omega lingered in my nose. A smell so sweet and intoxicating. He was on the verge of going into heat, and now there he was, right across from me in the very place I first picked up his scent — The Pine Wood Falls Welcome Center.

“Can I help you with something, sir?” he asked. I took in a sharp breath as he looked up at me with his amazing green eyes. He swiped a strand of his light-blond hair out of his face and stood up, shuffling some papers on his desk. I had about a good foot on the omega in height. He was small and precious, and even though he didn’t know it yet, my future.

“I’m supposed to meet with Mr. Jones.”

“Okay, I’ll let him know you’re here.” His eyes then darted around the office. “Mr. Jones usually meets with everyone out in the dayroom.”

“All right. I’m Campbell. Campbell Vallejo,” I said, holding my hand out for a shake.

“Thomas,” he said, shaking my hand. He gasped when our palms met. Neither of us pulled our hands away.

“Nice to meet you, Thomas.” I gave him a smile, and his cheeks flushed bright pink.

He nodded and glanced down.

“Campbell, good to see you.” Mr. Jones walked into the small office and clapped me on the back. Thomas let go of my hand and dropped his arms to his sides.

“Hello, Mr. Jones.” Mr. Jones was a tall, attractive man with dark brown skin and a happy smile. His omega passed away years ago, so he now focused all of his attention on Pine Wood Falls. The very community his family started.

“I see you’ve met Thomas.”

“Sure have.”

“He’s our newest hire. Pine Wood Falls is growing, and we needed someone to help things run smoothly. He’s going to be a great administrative assistant.”

“Just start?” I asked.

“No, it’s been a couple months. I’m just not very good at my job, I guess.” Thomas’ face fell, and he fiddled with a file folder he picked up and held in front of his pants.

“I should reword that. You are a great administrative assistant.” Mr. Jones smiled and put his hands on his hips.

“Thanks,” Thomas whispered.

“Thomas,” Mr. Jones said.

He glanced up.

“You are. Now, Campbell, let’s go out to the dayroom and have our strategy meeting.” Mr. Jones led me out from the office, through the foyer, and to a table in the corner of the dayroom. He waved at a chair for me to sit in.

“I don’t think I’ve seen Thomas around before. Is he new to the community?” I glanced over my shoulder, hoping he’d be standing there. One omega knitted in the corner with a couple of baby carriers at their feet, and an alpha/omega couple sat on the back couch, but no Thomas.

“Newish. He showed up here about five months ago on the verge of having his babies, and we took him in. He’s been a little wary of others, so he doesn’t venture out much. Up until about a month ago, he worked from home.”

“And his alpha?” I asked because if he already had children perhaps somehow my senses were off. Maybe I was just smelling the part of him that was about to go into heat and not the part that would be mine.

“Gone, and we’re glad of that, bad news, but I shouldn’t talk too much about the poor boy. I’m sure he wouldn’t appreciate it.”

“Of course.”

Mr. Jones and I got down to work. He wanted to use my skills as a creative director at an advertising firm to help reach alphas and omegas who are new to Pine Wood Falls or hadn’t found their way there yet.

“I can make up some nice informational booklets for those who just arrive.” As with any new project, my mind whirled with tons of ideas.

“And for those who have just found out.”

“Of course, I can do that.”

“Some come to our meet and greets, but it would be nice to give them something they can take home and read, and some don’t want to talk to others yet.” Mr. Jones said.

“I could imagine if you just found out you had the alpha or omega wolf gene, it would be a lot to process.”

“Yes, it is a lot, but we’ve been lucky to have you here since you were born.”

“And I love it here and would never leave.” I did go away to college, but returned to live, working in the city not too far away. My dream was to find my fated omega and live the life I only hoped for. I lost family when I was younger and raised by a widowed omega.

“Now how much is your going rate?” Mr. Jones clasped his hands together on the table in front of him and gave me a smile.

“I’m not going to charge you. It’ll be my way of giving back.” That was how Pine Wood Falls kept going after so many years. We all did our part.

“That’s so kind. Now, what do you know about websites?”

“You want to take us public?” We were proud of who we were but knew the reality, how the general population would more than likely react negatively to a group of people with wolf genes and how a large portion of them, the ones with the omega gene, were intersex who can carry and give birth to children. Slowly, men (not all omegas identified as men, but many did) having children was becoming socially recognized, but most the omegas didn’t like the attention that it brought. We mainly wanted to keep our way of life quiet.

“No, but I wish there was some way for people who look online for information to have a way to reach us or to learn more, but without having a site saying what we are. And that sounds pretty impossible.”

“Would a site with an email and phone number do?” I asked.

“But how would they know they found the right thing?” Mr. Jones waved to a young couple that had walked in. One of them being a very pregnant omega.

“Keywords. People search by keywords, so if someone searched up male and pregnant, your site would come up, but it wouldn’t have to say any of that on the site itself.”

Mr. Jones smiled. “That sounds perfect.”

“I’ll get right on it.”

“Thank you so much, Campbell.”

“No problem. You and Pine Wood Falls have done so much for me. It’s about time I gave back.”

“You donate plenty.”

“It’s about more than money. Anybody who has it can donate it.”

“You’ve contributed so much to the community. You just don’t realize it.”

“Thanks, and I’ll get started on this all as soon as I get home.” As I left, I took in a deep breath, the scent of Thomas lingering in my nose, making me so hard.

An alpha prince ready to find his fated mate. A Selkie who wishes he wasn’t omega-born…

Unlike his brothers, Prince Adrian, the dutiful second-born son to the King of the North, looks forward to finding his true mate and producing an heir. Until he stumbles across a beta guard with an enticing scent.

Del never wanted to be an omega. All his life, he’s only wanted one thing: to serve as a Royal Guard. Though forbidden, he found a concoction to mask his omega scent and was successful until his dwindling supply caused the alpha prince to discover his deception.

Rian not only breaks every cherished royal tradition, but ends up hiding Del until he can figure out the reason for the attraction between them. However, one selfish mistake puts them in a precarious position they can’t escape. Their reckless actions have them worried they’ll be banished from the Selkie community. Rian needs a plan to convince his father to accept his mate before he has to risk everything he’s ever known and loved for their future. Because, no matter what the king says, Rian will not give up Del.

Excerpt

Prince Adrian, the second born alpha son to the King of the North, frowned. As he stood near the throne where his father sat with his four brothers flanking him, his gaze bounced off the six omegas that had their foreheads pinned to the stone floor and their naked asses presented in the air.

He sighed quietly in disappointment. Not one of these omegas was his fated mate. The Selkie Seekers had gathered these males from good families all over the world, but none of the half dozen presented today belonged to him.

Rian—as his brothers liked to call him—glanced over at Luca who stood with his pup, Dylan, at the back of the Great Hall, bouncing the baby in his arms to keep him from fussing. He reminded himself that it had taken his oldest brother, Kai, several presentation ceremonies until he found his fated mate.

This was only Rian’s first. But still…

Unlike Kai, Rian had always preferred the Selkie traditions and he looked forward to finding his true mate and producing an heir. He was tired of rutting with the betas they had at their disposal. And to even think about rutting with a human…

He wrinkled his nose. His brothers may very well enjoy the sexual release the human males brought, but Rian refused to join them. He was a Selkie prince. He would rut only with another Selkie.

He found humans to be boring and figured none of them would be able to take his size anyway. As his brothers liked to point out time and time again, Rian was big. Most alphas were, but his was… extraordinary. As his younger brother Zale liked to call it… a dinosaur bone.

Not even all the betas could accommodate him. He knew which ones could and tended to use them for relief when needed.

He wrinkled his nose again, but this time it was for another reason. A sweet scent pulled at him. And it wasn’t coming from any of the omegas kneeling on the ground before him.

His eyes flicked back to Luca. Then he twisted his head and glanced over his shoulder at Kai. “Is Luca due to come into oestrus soon?”

Kai’s blue eyes narrowed as his gaze shot to his omega mate then back to Rian. “No.”

Rian inhaled deeply trying to pinpoint what the smell was and where it was coming from. “Do you smell that?”

Before any of his brothers could answer him, this father, the king, loudly pounded the end of his scepter onto the floor at his feet.

“Douglass! If Prince Adrian cannot identify any of these omegas as his fated mate, then let’s get this wrapped up.”

His father’s asshole assistant fluttered down the steps from where he’d been standing behind the king, and approached Rian.

Rian frowned at the weasel-faced beta servant. “What?”

“Has none of them caught your fancy, Your Highness?”

Rian let his gaze wander over the six naked males all bent over in a line. “None of these are my omega, Douglass. You may dismiss them all.” He tried to keep the disappointment out of his voice, but it was a struggle.

With a nod of his head and what curiously looked like a satisfied expression, Douglass clapped his hands, had the omegas rise to their feet, and herded them out of the Great Hall.

Rian couldn’t help but take one last look at the naked males. All were from acceptable families, all very handsome and some were even hung very well for an omega, but even if he was sexually interested in any of them, he was forbidden to rut with them.

Doing so could throw an omega into heat and with heat came pregnancy and then Rian would be stuck with an omega who was not his intended fated mate.

All for a quick dalliance.

Rutting for pleasure with an omega would also ruin the omega’s reputation. Omegas didn’t have to come to their mate with their corona membrane intact, but no matter what, they couldn’t rut with an alpha unless it was their mate. To do so was illegal and could mean imprisonment. Or worse, banishment.

Excerpt

I sat down on his bed and kissed his forehead. “I don’t want to leave,” I said with tears in my eyes. “I… I love you, Piper.”

I lowered my head and thought about every single moment with him that we had together. Our bond was so intense, so unbreakable. But now it felt like we were being torn away again.

“I love you too,” Piper said. He lightly grazed my hand with his fingers, running across my palm. Slowly, our fingers interlocked.

“Then, what can we do? There has to be something. I’ll find a way,” I said.

Piper was silent, but there was only one thing to do in this moment, and that was act on our love. I slowly placed my forehead against his, feeling our warmth connect. I raised my chin and, finally, we kissed.

Our lips crushed together, and for one moment, the horrible parts of this world faded away. I felt my pulse quicken, and the heat of the moment took over all of my senses.

I wanted him so badly, but it wasn’t only lust. When you’re in love with someone, it becomes so much more than that. You are driven to feel that person and to experience all that they have to offer.

Sitting next to him, I curled my body around his. He pulled his lips away, eyes closed, and let out a quiet moan of pleasure. I smelled his rosy cologne, driving me absolutely wild.

“I want you,” Piper whispered. “But we have to be careful.”

He was forbidden, but no rules could stop what was about to happen. No community could take our love away. It didn’t matter how far he was from me because I would always be connected to him.

This was forever. Fuck the ones who couldn’t understand that.

I gathered my things, followed Marcus into his office, and shut the door. I was nervous about Amy or Luke figuring out that I had fucked my boss last weekend. I was starting to realize how careful we had to be, and how much was at stake. I couldn’t believe I was doing this, but nobody could force me to turn away from Marcus. He was the man I wanted. The alpha I wanted.  There was no way I was giving him up.

Marcus was standing right in front of me when I turned around from closing the door. “I actually do want to go over the Foreman case with you, but first…” He grabbed my legal pad out of my hands, setting them on the desk behind him without even looking. Then he ran his hands through my hair, and down my neck and chest.

“Just kiss me already.”

Marcus pulled me towards him, walking backwards until he hit the desk, then he turned around and pushed me against the desk.

“Oh don’t worry, I plan to.”

The heat in his eyes matched mine. My cock had woken up when Marcus stood near me in the paralegal section, but now it was well on its way to a full hard-on.  He leaned in, gently kissing me, but I grabbed the back of his head and a handful of ass and dove in like he was a slice of New York cheesecake. Marcus hesitated, probably from shock, then he took control and drove me absolutely wild. He ran his hands over my back, played with my hair, thumbed my nipples.  He pulled me closer to him.  I sat back on the desk and wrapped my legs around him as we kissed, rubbing against each other.

I had to take a breath. Marcus licked a trail from my collarbone up to my jaw. “My God, you are fucking amazing.” That may not have been the most eloquent thing anyone has ever said to their lover, but it was the only words in my mind at the time.

“I want to fuck you so bad right now. I’ve been so hard today, I haven’t been able to get anything done. You’ve been a distraction since I got to work and saw you.” He went back to kissing me, wrapping his arms around  my back, rubbing against me.  I was so horny, so in need of a release, that there was no way I could focus on anything at all except Marcus. I pulled back, panting, staring at Marcus. His eyes were filled with lust and need, looking right at me. God, I wanted him.

“I’ve never done this before, but I can’t get a damn thing done until I get some release. I want you. What do you think about getting fucked on my desk?”

Excerpt

As I slipped into the Scion pack’s industrial kitchen, heat laced with tomato and Cajun spices hit me like the leading edge of a storm. My skin tingled. Kevin hadn’t seen me yet. Or smelled me, but he would. Soon. Most of the time, Kevin acted more like a caged animal than the living spine of Baton Rouge’s heroin and gun trade.

Kevin perched on a tall stool in front of the large metal countertops beside the stove. He tapped the nub of his pencil rapidly down what looked like, from the doorway, printouts of a five-column spreadsheet. His attention flitted between those and an open, wire bound notebook. I’d seen him carry it before. Baby blue pastel with three kittens meowing on the front.

The uncooked books.

Sweat blossomed from my chest, trickling beneath my T-shirt. Kevin didn’t look immune either. His short sleeved, white button-down shirt was stained the pits with sweat, and his blond hair clung to his forehead in sticky strands. He took a heavy dishcloth from the counter and wiped across his forehead.

Kevin looked too sweet to be a criminal. He looked too sweet to have killed his mate when Caleb, with Red’s blessing, had taken Kevin out on the Bayou to claim him. Kevin had been seventeen. Now he was twenty-one with hard gray eyes. A killer’s eyes? Sweet Kevin with a sharp yellow number two pencil, two pots of gumbo, and a notebook with kittens on the cover. Maybe he’d done it. If so, maybe he’d had a good reason.

Kevin cocked his head and bit lightly on the pencil’s eraser. Already half hard from watching him work, my cock rose to full mast at the thought of those lips wrapped around it.

Jeremy’s words came back to me. Everyone’s interested.

To have those steel gray eyes focus on me with the same attention he was giving those papers, to have those lips part as I breached him — what the hell was I thinking?I had better manners, and much better sense than to mix myself up personally with the Pack Alpha’s nephew.

I must have shifted my weight, or moved, or maybe the scent of my arousal had penetrated the tomato and spice of the gumbo, because Kevin gave a start. He closed the notebook and spun the stool around to face me.

“Dinner is at six,” Kevin said. His expression was guarded.

“I need help with these receipts.” I pulled them out of my pocket, twelve of them folded in the center, along with the income report I’d deliberately fucked up.

“Just drop them at the office. You’ve been here two weeks. Someone should have told you.”

“They did. It’s these papers too. They don’t add up.” I closed the space between us, holding the receipts and paperwork out like an offering. He was tense, but trying not to show it. And not the kind of tension I wanted. He smelled of fear. Though to his credit, his expression, one of stiff annoyance, betrayed nothing.

I wanted to erase that crease between his brows and press my thumbs into his shoulder muscles while I nibbled kisses against his neck.

What the fuck was wrong with me?

Excerpt

Devon froze. In his wolf sight, the omega male was a monochrome figure in gray, brown, and tan. He had a round face and light hair, escaping in scraggly curls that were tied at the nape of his neck in an elastic band. If Devon had been human, his mind might have drifted to poetry. The soft roundness of his figure was hinted at tantalizingly beneath a thin rain jacket and sodden yoga pants. His lips were full, his nose upturned endearingly at the tip.

The omega smelled like the sweetness of fresh kill, and Devon wanted to lick him. To taste him.

Stupid with desire, Devon whimpered.

This was bad. A deep, instinctual part of him recognized that the omega in front of him was his true mate.

The omega froze in place. “Who’s there?” He wiped the sleeve of his jacket over his face and blinked. Squinting into the darkness. “Hello? Who’s there?”

Devon held his breath. This omega was his true mate, and instinct demanded that Devon make his claim. But he had a job to do. If he revealed himself, he would put his entire pack in danger.

The omega sniffed the air. Between the rain and his weaker human senses, he should not have been able to smell Devon. But he tensed, and Devon recognized both fear and curiosity as the omega turned toward him. “You’re an alpha. I don’t know you.” The growing panic was evident in his tone. He would shout for help soon. Devon was surprised he hadn’t shouted yet. Maybe there was some way to salvage this. Devon shifted, and then hands raised, he stood.

Cold rain streamed down his body. Though Devon knew he lacked the essential viciousness that made an alpha truly strong, none of that was reflected in his body. A surge of pride washed over him as the omega’s lips parted, and his eyes grew wide, and Devon smelled his desire.

“I’m Devon.”

“Ezekiel. Zeke. Your, um…” Zeke ran his tongue between his lips, and imagining that tongue in those lips on him made Devon’s cock swell.

Devon kicked himself. He should have stayed hidden. He should have killed Zeke before the omega had seen him. But Zeke was his true mate, and even if he hadn’t been, Devon didn’t have it in him to kill an innocent omega in cold blood. He wasn’t his father. He wasn’t his grandfather. Which meant Devon would have to take Zeke with him, at least until all of this was over.

Zeke was his true mate, and there was no way he was going to let the omega come to harm.

But first, he had to make Zeke comfortable enough to trust him.

“I have some clothes in this backpack,” Devon said, shrugging his shoulders. “Do you mind if—?”

“Yeah! You should do that!” Zeke swallowed. “Not that I mind looking at you. I mean, you’re really hot and—” He shook his head, and judging by the tint of embarrassment in his scent, Devon guessed that Zeke had flushed as well.

It was perfect. And terrifying.
