Ghosts always remember. Mobsters never forget.

Blurb

Erik Mitchell helped Interpol bust cartels, oligarchs, and spoiled billionaires for art fraud. As an undercover cop, Ben Nolan helped bring down a Newark crime family. Now Erik and Ben have started over in Cape May, leaving their danger-filled jobs behind them, excited about a fresh start and their new relationship.

Plans to renovate a historic old theater stir up dangerous ghosts and revive interest in unsolved Mob hits. The curse of a murdered witch strikes a close friend, old movie props reveal clues to long-ago crimes, and a shakedown scheme sends Ben’s cousin running for cover.

Time is running out to lift the curse. The Russian Mob wants revenge on Erik, and the Newark Mob is gunning for Ben. A grieving ghost seeks justice. Secrets, lies, and deception unravel in the blink of an eye.

Erik and Ben were planning for happily ever after. But unless they can outwit witches, wraiths, and wise guys, they could go down in a hail of gunfire and a blast of dark magic—and see their plans go up in smoke.

Blink is a suspenseful MM paranormal romance mystery-adventure filled with second chance love, hurt/comfort, true soulmates, awesome food trucks, dangerous secrets, restless ghosts, psychic visions, powerful witches, angry mobsters, and a very haunted theater.

Excerpt

“Hi everyone. Are we going in?” A dark-haired woman in her early forties with olive skin and black hair sauntered up, dark eyes sparkling with curiosity. Alessia Mason always seemed calm and controlled, but now she clearly radiated excitement at the possibility of glimpsing the old theater.

Alessia owned the Spirit of the Sea gift shop and had married into one of the old Cape May families, but right now what mattered most was her role as the head of the local coven and the powerful magic she had inherited from her Sicilian mother.

“Right this way,” Jaxon said, brandishing the key. “The Arts Council officially owns the building, so we don’t even have to sneak in.”

He unlocked the door to the convenience store, which was a shell of its past self. All of the fixtures had been sold off, but the faded signage around the top of the walls remained, directing customers toward soft drinks, sundries, and restrooms.

They followed him inside, and Jaxon locked the door behind them. Then they headed toward the back, past the break room and offices to an unmarked door.

“The store was here for over twenty years, and most people never knew that the Regent Theater lay behind it,” Jaxon said. He gestured toward the area they had just navigated.

“Imagine coming through the big glass doors, past the ticket booth,” Jaxon said, pointing back the way they had come. “You’d enter a high-ceiling lobby with a bar, concession stand, and seating for patrons who came early to see and be seen. Then you’d move farther inside, and there would be double doors leading into the actual theater.”

Erik looked behind them, struggling to imagine the way it had once been. A grid of acoustic panels hid the original molded plaster ceiling several feet higher that he had seen in photographs. The plain walls and stained tile floor made it difficult to picture lush red carpet, velvet rope swags, cocktail servers, and a concession stand that not only had popcorn but according to the stories Jaxon shared on the drive over, also served foie gras.

Jaxon opened the door and reached inside to flip on a light. Erik hesitated to get a psychic read on the space ahead.

“Definitely haunted,” Alessia said, staring into the distance with a glazed look that told Erik her attention lay elsewhere.

His own touch magic worked differently. To get a strong reaction, Erik usually had to be in physical contact with an object. He had avoided touching anything since they had arrived, but even so, the theater itself gave off unmistakable vibes. Both he and Alessia had extra perception which included seeing ghosts, although neither was a full medium able to summon or speak with the dead.

“Bad things happened here.” Erik found himself speaking before he realized it. “Dark magic. Death. Cursed.”

Sometimes love is defined by fear.

Blurb

They’d been through it all and emerged victorious. Now they stood on the very brink of a whole new life bursting with possibilities and renewed hope for the future. Colin will take the bar exam and begin his promising career as an Assistant Commonwealth Attorney for the city of Charlottesville. Joshua receives his second Ph.D. and adds Forensic Psychologist to his list of achievements. What could possibly go wrong?

And then:

Three students are abducted from the University of Virginia campus. All three are recovered alive but have been sexually assaulted and brutally beaten. From his new position as Assistant Commonwealth Attorney, Colin partners with both campus and city police in a combined task force determined to solve these horrific crimes and put the perpetrator behind bars. But can they succeed before the ‘campus abductor’ strikes again?

The abusive and volatile husband of one of Joshua’s patients threatens his life. Suddenly Joshua is under siege as he is stalked both at work and at home by an unstable assailant.

Entangled in both these life-threatening situations, Colin struggles to protect both the university he loves and the man he adores. But…

“Oh god, Josh, my sweet love, if anything’s happened to you…” his voice trailed off, unable to voice the unthinkable.

“NO! Joshua’s mind shrieked. I can’t give up! I won’t give up! Colin will come! He’ll come!”

Warning: This novel discusses sensitive material which may be distressing to some readers. Relevant Law explores themes of abduction, physical violence, and non-graphic sexual assault.

Excerpt

Colin surged to his feet and strode toward the front desk just as Ray, the desk sergeant entered. He grabbed Colin’s arm and drew him toward the door. “A friend of yours found Joshua’s car by the Culbreth.” He shoved Colin toward the door where several uniformed officers waited. “Go with the guys!”

Without uttering a sound he moved through the station house door and into the darkness beyond. He felt the cool night air touch his face and as he lurched to a halt his heart jackhammered against his chest. “Oh, sweet Jesus, no!” he whispered, feeling his insides twist with horror. “NO!” As he reached the squad car, he felt a strong hand grab his arm and guide him into the vehicle.

“Just take it easy, Colin. We’ll find him.”

When the squad car approached the street where the Culbreth Theater was located they were nearly blinded by the spinning flash of police and ambulance lights. The area was already surrounded by law enforcement and Colin spotted both campus and city police cars parked at random angles, blocking off the street forcing them to stop where they were.

He bolted from the car and ran to where several police officers were gathered. Some were bending to examine the ground, and the beam from various flashlights darted here and there as others examined every inch of ground, sidewalk, bushes, and street.

“Colin!” a voice called, and he spun to see Lenny striding toward him. “Ray called me,” Lenny said, grabbing Colin in a tight embrace. “We’ll find him, Colin. I promise you. We’ll find him.”

He saw flashing police lights in the parking lot across the street and sprinted across the busy avenue to join them. He spotted Joshua’s car at once, surrounded by several uniformed police and moved toward it. As he approached, one of the officers grabbed his arm. “Colin, don’t touch it! We want to check it for prints or other evidence.”

Colin nodded but gave no response. He turned away and blindly stumbled back across the street to the theater. For a moment he stood, surrounded by the flashing lights, hearing the murmur of somber voices, feeling himself teetering on the edge of collapse. “Josh,” he moaned. “Oh god, this can’t be happening.”

He felt Lenny take his arm and lead him to one side. “Take it easy, buddy. Just let the guys work. They’ll figure it out. We’ll find him, Colin. We’re searching his car now, looking for anything that might help us. We can’t find his cellphone anywhere.”

Colin lowered his head and nodded without fully understanding, then spun as the sound of heartbroken sobbing reached his ears. He saw David kneeling on the ground, embracing someone who was bent over, clutching a cloth garment, rocking back and forth as if in pain. He moved to where David knelt and fell to the ground beside him. The voice was Nate’s.

“I heard him!” Nate choked out, shaking with sobs. “I heard him cry out, but I ignored it. Thought I was imagining things! It’s my fault! He brought me my jacket and it’s my fault! Oh god, oh god, oh god! Josh!” He lifted his head and his tear-streaked face twisted in pain when he saw Colin kneeling beside him. “Oh god, Colin, forgive me!”

About the Author

My name is Janice Jarrell. I am a retired grandmother who lives in Seattle, WA.  I have two children and three grandsons. I’ve been writing gay romance since I was twelve years old, only back then it wasn’t called ‘gay romance’. In fact, it had no name at all. It was the fifty’s, and it was worth your life to admit to being gay, let alone confess to being a girl who constantly fantasized about relationships between gay men. Hell, I didn’t even know what a homosexual was. I lived on a farm out in the sticks in a tiny Michigan village and I’d never, to my knowledge, even heard the word. I just knew I loved the thought of boy-on-boy romance. I just knew that there was something hot going on between Tom Corbett and his Space Cadets and all those guys on ‘Combat’.

I wrote slash fanfiction for 30 years, writing over 337 stories, some as short as 100 words (a drabble), some as long as a series which was over 119,012 words. I enjoy writing my stories. I enjoyed the feedback I received from my readers. It was a creative release I’d been searching for my entire life and I blessed the Internet for leading me to this artistic oasis for my spirit.

Love’s Magic was my very first step into writing my own characters. I will always be grateful to the slash fanfiction community for nurturing the budding author until she was ready to blossom into a fully realized novelist. It’s been an amazing thing to watch the gay community’s growth over these past twenty years. My own journey has echoed theirs in many ways, and I’m grateful to all those gay activists who fought to give the gay community the rights and privileges they always deserved. Love’s Trials, Love’s Glory, and Love’s Lawyer were the second and third, and forth books in the series and all four books are available in audio format on Audible.

I’m also grateful to the gay romance community, readers, authors, publishers and promoters, who are making these, my retirement years, the most creative ones of my life. When I’m not writing, I’m traveling, walking, hiking, knitting, crocheting, and weaving.

I’m very excited about the upcoming release of my fifth contemporary gay romance novel, Relevant Law. Those of you who fell in love with Joshua and Colin in the four previous books in this series are in for a bit of angst in this latest episode. A dark and sinister cloud hangs over the University of Virginia after three students are abducted, raped and beaten. Colin works with both campus and city police to catch the perpetrator, but his hard work and effort proves futile when Joshua turns up missing!

Despite their struggles there are still many passionate, loving moments and the friends they treasure will be there to help them find their way.

How far would you go to get what you want?

Blurb

Bangkok Burning is a brilliantly unsettling thriller about the dark side of desire. It is also something of a warped love letter to a place teeming with a rogues’ gallery of characters, for this is not just about one man’s struggle but a portrait of a whole city on the brink.

Closeted forty-year-old Graham Floyd, trapped by anxiety issues and an abusive marriage, finally escapes, running away from his lifeless existence on a smile and a whim, swapping dreary south London for the brutal chaos of Bangkok. He soon finds himself prey not only to Natasha, the transsexual nightclub schemer he loses his heart to, but in thrall to the slimy American millionaire Svengali who owns her. In a place where Graham is at last true to himself, will he triumph in a fight to the death to get what he really wants?

Excerpt

Graham knew he only had seven days, just a week to get what he craved – a new life.

A cacophony of voices in pidgin English broke him out of his trance, the grabbing, everywhere hands accosting him as he neared the entrance. He was back, the tawdry plywood exterior looking even poorer than he remembered illuminated by the tacky red neon sign announcing Christie Cabaret Show. Greeted by the same throbbing Thai pop music, beating in time to his heart, the gutter stink of cheap perfume, the place looked much smaller and far more decadent than it had in his mind’s eye over the last few weeks. In his dreams he’d expected to walk in and find her, poised, as if she’d been waiting for him, but Graham felt cheated as he looked around frantically at the other ladyboys. Though how he hated that word, the fact he could possibly be desperate for one of their ilk. Staring out at the braying red-faced punters, Thai girls curled serpent-like around bovine white men, their eyes calculating every move, brains computing every sentence uttered he saw a kind of hell and of Natasha there was no sign.

‘God,’ he said to himself, feeling his muscles tense, mouth desert dry, palms leaking sweat, chewing at nails so destroyed blood was oozing out of them.

‘Can I help you, Sir?’ said not a divine being but a heavily made-up boy.

‘Where’s Natasha?’ he said, wheeling around, scanning the bar again.

‘Natasha?’ said the boy with a shrug.

He flopped down at a bar stool overlooking the ramshackle stage, sighing as the first strains of Whitney Houston’s ‘I Will Always Love You’ – one of wife Sheila’s favourites – struck up and a ridiculously elaborately dressed ladyboy appeared, lip-synching in all the wrong places.

‘Beer, please,’ said Graham to the boy who’d continued to hover and he was gone with a practised and unnecessary shake of his arse.

‘All right, babe. As one alcoholic would say to another, you look like you need a drink,’ said a man to his right, fruity voice cutting through the din, a gnarled hand seemingly weighed down by a worrying amount of gold jewellery enveloping his arm. ‘Great this, ain’t it.’

‘Graham, what’s yours? Though everyone calls me Gray as in Mr Gray. Like my life,’ he said, turning to look at his new best friend, taking in the yellowing skin which was the hue of old newspapers, the gin-coloured hair.

‘Nigel… Nigel Monroe.’

‘Good to meet you, Nigel Monroe.’

‘You can live like a king ‘ere, dear,’ he said, voice a shouty amalgam of Cockney and camp, raising a glass unsteadily with one hand, patting the boy’s arse with the other. ‘These girls, you see, know what they want and how to get it.’

‘Do you know Natasha?’

‘Let’s see, I’ve been here since 1990, so that’s twenty years now. Twenty bloody years man and boy…’

‘Where were you before?’

‘Before? Was there a before?’ he said, looking out into the middle distance. ‘All over. And you?’

‘South London.’

‘Don’t sound like it.’

‘I don’t have a strong accent. Guess you could say I’m well read. Like my crosswords and that. But, come on, what have you been doing here?’

‘Ah, the first rule of being an expat, never ask that question ‘ere,’ he said, shakily raising a hand. ‘People get offended. But, you know, this and that…’

As he tailed off, Graham sensed regret, his companion staring off beyond the nonsense on stage and into the darkness beyond, as though wondering how he’d ‘lost touch’, so the phrase went, with friends and family, with his roots, with who he actually was, traded it all in for a seat in a dive bar in a city halfway around the world. He didn’t want to bloody end up like that.

Excerpts

Book 1 (First Conquest)

Rory was interrupted by the feeling of a needle plunging into his shoulder. His eyes snapped open, but almost immediately, irresistible sleepiness washed over him.

“This is not my fault. This is your fault. It won’t happen if you ever recognize me. You never saw me. You never pay attention to me. You never did that even once.”

The Doctor reached out greedily and tweaked Rory’s big pink nipples with his meaty hands. Rory let out an uncontrollable wail of orgasmic pleasure as he was played with. His nipples were as sensitive as cock. A short, thin plug, flared at one end, rose up from the table between Rory’s legs. Softly and gently, the plug slid into the superhero’s dick hole, sealing his exit and giving his cum no means of escape.

Tears streamed down his eyes, dampened his handsome face. He started to feel empty, like someone subtly cut off an essential part of his body. But instead of pain, he feels a delight sensation that was just getting higher and higher each time the foreign Thing invaded every aspect of his brain, every inch of his soul. The former hero was like unmolded clay, ready to be sculpted into whatever his sculptor wished.

Book 2 (Steamy Pleasure)

“Rory… Rory… Rory…” She wept, her tears falling onto the screen in fat drops, “Where are you…? I’m so worried….” Remember her bad and creepy dream, she cried harder. Martha wept even harder as she saw the newest picture. That is the moment before they went into her apartment when Rory proposes to her. She took a small box from the table and opened it. There are two beautiful golden rings inside it. Rory took it off when they had sex on her bed. “Oh, Rory…” she held the ring and bawled. “What’s happened to you? Where have you gone?” Unwittingly, some parts of her past come to her vision.

Jack realized he already drooled over Mateo’s body without blinked for a minute. He quickly turned his face and cursed. Shit, why could I never hold back this lust, this despicable sin? Mateo is my leader, best friend, even brother. I shouldn’t have a feeling for him. The pale guy closed his eyes and rested his mind. It’s been more than 5 years since their life is started getting worse.

Flare yelped and moaned in agonized ecstasy, especially when Frost leaned down, sucked on his sensitive nipple, then blew on it with his icy-cold breath power, hardening the tip into a tender little erect nub. As their hard cocks rubbed and entwined beneath the water, the power of hot and cold coming from their bodies made wave after wave of mist and steam filled the room.

Evil Brain grinned as he watched the two heroes embraced their new life. The silhouette of two masculine bodies having hot copulation can be seen from the torrent of steam and mist.

Victor growled in dismay as his former teammate obeyed Dr. P’s orders and melted the ice away with his fire powers. He hoped they could somehow resist the perverted villain’s control over them, but it looked like Frost and Flare were a lost cause. His limbs were no longer bound, but he remained on his hands and knees as his suit continued to be unresponsive.

The helmet immediately came to life, and the Terminator’s chocolate-skinned, naked body, was immediately encased with black armor, as dark as midnight. The material wasn’t metal exactly. It looked wetter, slightly rubbery, and also quite shiny. It certainly felt like rubber when it made contact with the new villain’s skin. Several tubes as thick as a hose came out from the helmet and another one from his crotch and connected itself to the respirator. He looked like he was on some kind of life support.

About the Author

Do you prefer to see my short or long bio?

The short one? You got it.

I was a bookworm, especially in fiction, fantasy, erotica, and romance. I drown into the enormous pleasure feeling of reading M/M erotica books since a teen. I found reading steamy gay erotica and romance book makes me feel complete, understand deeply what kind of person is I am, what is true my personality, I can be my own true self, and the best thing is I met with so many incredible friends that really support me. Since I live in an environment where LGBTQ+ is still a very taboo topic, it’s a huge relief.

I love reading and have a broad and wild imagination, but I’m not a good writer. Even English is not my first language, lol. A few years ago, I started to write after thinking deeply that I want to make my own wild imagination come true. I really want my vision to come true because It kind of desperate me whenever I read a story with some scenes that I feel “Hey, it could be hotter if like this,” or “Hm, it could be different if there is…”. Well, so here I am. A reckless young ordinary guy in his mid 20’s with no good English and writing skill try to become a writer and publish his own gay erotic books. Funny, isn’t it?

So, how was that?

Not long enough? A little more detail about me? Alright.

I have broad kinks, but the most special one for me since I was a kid is where the video or story includes many muscles, pecs, nipples, abs. Yes, I have a powerful lust for man’s sculpted body. Sparse hair is acceptable, as long as not exaggerated. I also love seeing a guy being raped, submissive and brainwashed. One of my favorite movies is Batman and Robin (1997). Do you know why? It’s simply because I love seeing the handsome muscular Robin being hypnotized by Poison Ivy pheromone.

Hei, so you’re bisexual because you like sexy Poison Ivy? Well, I still don’t know what my exact gender is. But I still love seeing straight sex as long as the guy is hot and sexy, lol.

Oh, I also love superheroes, alien, and tentacle things. I think everyone loves superheroes, right? their muscular body and tight costume always make me aroused. I also love the Alien movie when the man had sex and was raped by the alien. I also admire a lot of tentacles illustrations that raped and seduced a man. So, here I am with my first series, Superheroes Enslavement. Hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy writing it.

INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR

How long have you been writing?

Just few months ago, around May.

What made you decide you wanted to put yourself out there to be published?

I’ve read a lot of gay erotica stories and comics. Then, it’s turned out that my ultimate gay story kinks are straight to gay, hypnotized and brainwash. Someday, I found GaySpiralStories site where we can publish story related to brainwash kink. The site has 5 unique categories of rating with 3 levels. After I publish the story, it turned out that many readers like it, and I’m so surprised that I got huge rating. Besides rating, I just realized that I have a lot of naughty imaginations that I can write it by myself, instead of waiting and looking for someone to someday write it. I’m quite happy that I could get some money from it. It’s enough although just one or two people that like my story. I do this just as my side job.

Before you started, had you written any fan fiction? If so, what fandom?

No, I haven’t

Are you in agreement that writing fan fiction is a great way to hone ones’ craft – why or why not?

I think so, because writing fan fiction means you already have the base plot and characters to write the story, so you just have to recreate it and add some additional details.

What was your first published book?

Superheroes Enslavement series

Do you have a favorite character from one of your books? Why?

I love all my characters, but if I have to choose I will go with Rory-Stephen couple, Dr.P, and The Thing. Since we’re still I book 4 I don’t want to reveal other characters that will appear in arc 2, LoL. Since Rory/Smart Brain/Evil Brain is the main character of this story, and he’s the first character of my dream, I really love him, and I want Stephen to accompany him forever. At first I didn’t plan to made them as a couple, but it turned out to be really hot to make a couple of best friends in the past is changed into a lover. I really like that idea. For Dr.P and The Thing, well, they’re our 2 main villains in the story. Of course I like it since on arc 2 we will dig deeper inside both past, like how first they met, what is the real identity of The Thing, etc. I love to write these 2 characters.

What is your favorite sub-genre to write?

Science fiction, erotica, fantasy, straight to gay

Is there one genre you haven’t tried but you see yourself writing in the future?

Maybe fantasy. I want to write about vampire. They’re sexy, mysterious, and hot

Would you ever write a hetero romance? Why or why not?

No, I haven’t. I’m gay. I love to read straight romance or erotica story as long as the guy is handsome, muscular, and pretty good at sex.

What are your thoughts on erotica?

I’m more into erotica with slight romance. Maybe the proportion is 80:20 for erotica and romance respectively.

Name your favorite authors and some of their stories you’ve enjoyed?

Joey W. Hill, Cherise Sinclair, Lexy Timms, Finley Fenn, Verity Vixxen

What book are you reading at the moment? It’s okay to give a fellow author a plug!

Vampire Queen by Joey W. Hill, Servicing the Target by Cherise Sinclair, Dominating Personal Assistant by Lexy Timms. For gay books such as Nox by Adrienne Wielder, and Unhinged by Onkey James

What are you currently working on?

The 4th book of Superheroes Enslavement series

When creating your characters, do you have models/actors/real people in mind or are they totally fictional?

I got inspiration for name from my favorite actors, models, and characters from other books and gay game. I love playing gay game, some of my character’s name are came from it.

How descriptive are you in the sex scenes?

I love details description of sec scenes. Therefore, I love to make it long from the kissing, unbuttoning the shirt, worshiping body, the fuck scene, the cum scene, the aftermath. I like to add dialogues and expression when the characters have sex

Do you think women making up a good portion of the m/m fiction writers detracts from the genre? Why or why not?

Actually I haven’t think deeply about this issue, although I’m curious why a lot of women like m/m genre, because in gay comic also a lot of writer is women.

What is it about gay fiction and or m/m romance that pleasures you to write it?

Because I’m gay I love to see m/m scene

Where do you see m/m romance in the next 5 years?

I still don’t know, but maybe since world is now really opened to anybody, and each country understand the characters of other countries, I think more people will love to read this genre openly

Name two male celebs that you’d like to see in a hot make out session?

Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth

Your favorite gay TV show or movie?

Sorry, I didn’t watch a lot of gay movies, just videos, LoL. But I love Dante’s Cove

Thank you for taking time to answer these questions, Stephen.

Excerpt

Shoda squeezed Aki’s arm. “Don’t think you’re getting out of buying me a beer that easily, Mr. Hot Shot Secretary.”

“We got to find a place first.”

“There should be one up another block.”

The streets were quiet, except for trash workers, but they avoided even glancing toward Aki and Shoda. Even without the inward-facing arrows of the Matsukawa crest pinned on their shirts, they could never lose their yakuza swagger.

“I’ve been trying to suck up to the ward leader in the redlight district,” Shoda said.

“You think the ward leader will move you there when your apprenticeship is over?”

“I think so, but who the fuck knows. I do everything they want, and I still feel like I haven’t gotten anywhere.”

“It hasn’t gone unnoticed. There have been a few times Father Murata talked about how he wished all the recruits were as dedicated as you.”

Shoda tugged on his ear. “I just gotta spend another six months cleaning toilets. Then probably another doing the same thing at one of the Kyoto wards. I joined the yakuza, not a maid service.”

Aki laughed. “I felt that way, too. It takes time. People have to learn they can trust you before they hand over bigger duties.”

“Is that so?”

“Wherever you go, I wish you the best. You’ll make a name for yourself.”

Even with the good wishes, Shoda’s face remained tight. “It was easier for you.”

The two passed through a narrow alley reeking of rotting fish and piss. The yellow trash bags took up so much space they had to walk single file.

“Maybe if I’d taken it up the ass, too, I would’ve gotten a cushy job answering phones by now,” Shoda said.

“I don’t just answ—”

“So you still have to suck his dick, too? Maybe we could both take turns. The fag might want some variety.”

Aki’s mouth slackened. “Shoda, you’re drunk.”

“And more clearheaded than ever before.”

Shoda snatched a handful of Aki’s chin-length hair and jerked him back. The world spun, and the first of the sun rays blinded Aki. Then Shoda’s fist connected with the side of Aki’s

face, and he fell onto the stuffed trash bags.

“Shoda!” Aki cried out while all the hours of training he put in at the boxing gym fluttered away like a paper trapped in a whirlwind.

“B-but we’re friends,” Aki managed to say. “Why? Why are you doing this?”

Shoda grunted and drew his arm back again. “Huh? High school grad can’t figure it out? You think you’re better than the rest of us, don’t you?”

Aki held up his arms, covering his face, but Shoda delivered a blow to his wrist that sent a shock wave of pain throughout Aki’s body. But it didn’t hurt as much as their breaking friendship.

“No! I never thought that,” Aki pleaded.

“I’m going to fuck you up so bad Father Murata won’t want to look at you. You two-toned freak!”

Another punch landed on Aki’s stomach. The beer sloshing in his gut churned up his throat. His thoughts swirled as he slid down the trash bags and vomited. It splashed back onto his white hands.

Shoda kicked him in the ribs. A trail of acid followed the rest of the contents of Aki’s stomach. Even with the copper taste of blood mixing with acid in his mouth, Aki knew the scuffle had to be a misunderstanding. They were best friends. Shoda just got a little hotheaded.

Aki wiped his mouth as Shoda stumbled back. Sure, Aki trained on a punching bag, but he never sparred with an actual person, let alone struck his best friend.

“Sho…”

How far will two sorcerers go to save humanity? Will they give up their lives? Will they give up their hearts?

Blurb

A broken mage. A penitent vampire. Can they put aside the horrors of the past to save each other?

Plagued with erratic. volatile magic, Nicodemus Green focuses his entire life to stop an evil sorcerer who brainwashes or kills anyone in his path to domination.   Ten years into this crusade, Nick stumbles upon his former Academy instructor in the Austrian Alps. The strict and pious Byron Domitius has cloistered himself in an isolated manor. Alone and starving, he hates the twisted, damned creature he has become.

A prophecy calls for Nick and Byron to bond by blood to finally bring an end to the sorcerer’s hidden agenda.  The two are forced to see beyond their shared past, and Nick finds himself desiring more from his old instructor than just his magic. But are these emotions real, or do they come from the heat of their bond?

Exclusive Excerpt – Feeding

Nick shifted his weight, turning from the bookcase and driving them towards the real purpose of his visit. “So, um… Beatrice informed me about this joining thing.” He pulled a folded paper from his back pocket. Nick stared down at the words on the creased paper and then back up at Byron, holding his gaze. There was something in those lively hazel eyes that Byron wondered at. There wasn’t any fear there, or abhorrence, but whatever it was, Byron couldn’t read it, or perhaps it was something he just didn’t recognize.

It wasn’t completely foreign, though. He’d seen it in Samson’s gaze, too.

“It looks like Jenny’s prophecy wants us to form a blood bond,” Nick read from the paper in a very level and dry voice, like one giving a lecture aimed at sending students to slumber, or for directions to the local market. Turn right at the city park, left at the gas station, and continue straight to find your destiny. Nick looked back up at Byron and asked, “Do you know what that means?”

“I am a vampire, Green. Of course, I know what that means,” he spat. No matter that he’d just learned this unwanted lore.

“Okay. Well… um… There’s another aspect to it. Uh… if we…” His impersonal façade was breaking down.

Byron decided to take pity on the man. “Love and sex strengthen it,” Byron said with a sigh. Nick nodded, a kind of wild, uneasy look about him. “Are you homosexual, Mr. Green?” he asked, though he knew the truth already.

Nick shivered, but then said, “I’m bisexual.”

“Ah, I see. So you understand the mechanics of male sex.”

Nick shrugged, looking as embarrassed as if he was standing naked on stage, and then nodded when Byron made an impatient snort.

In a flash, Byron was before Nick, using one of his newly understood powers. Why bother with fast, short-distance teleportation spells using mochit blood when he could move at such speeds? Nick took in a sharp breath and stepped back towards the door.

“Is that what you want, Green? To take my power and turn it against Wormwood?” he said in seductively dark tones, leaning close, but not close enough to touch the immortal blooded before him.

“I want him done with. I want this wandering lifestyle done with. I want to get on with real living,” Nick said with conviction. “If it means joining with you, if it means fucking you, sir, then I’ll do it.” Nick said the word ‘fucking’ with such sultry confidence that Byron was taken aback and realized how eager he was to drink from Nick again.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Hello Lily!  Let me start by thanking you for this opportunity to answer your questions. I’m Nat Kennedy and I live on the West Coast, USA.  I write mainly gay fantasy with romantic subplots that can (often?) include steamy scenes.  My books always include magic, a bit of angst, dedicated and supportive romantic partners, and dastardly bad guys.  In the romance subcategory, I always deliver an HEA.

I love both dogs and cats, though I’m more of a cat lady now (living in the city.)  I still love hiking and camping and for those on my Instagram (@natkennedybooks), you can see a lot of pictures from those adventures.

INTERVIEW PROMPTS…

The unqualified regret you wish you could amend…

I wish, as a young girl, I would have stood up for myself more.  Developed a backbone.  I’m not sure how one does that, other than through experience, but it’s my one regret.  Wow, that was a bit more straight to the gut that I expected.

The temptation you wish you could resist…

Video games.  I get completely sucked in.  I’m weak to a good story and quests.

The book that holds everlasting resonance…

Illusions by Robert Bach.  It is one of those soul searching/spiritual books that are perfect for teens trying to figure stuff out.  I think I’d still like it as an adult, but I’m afraid to re-read it, in case I ruin its memory.

The priority activity if you were invisible for a day…

Actually, being invisible has never been a huge draw.  Now, if I could talk to animals for a day, I’d bond with my cat and try to map out what each chirp and mew means.

The unlikely interest that engages your curiosity…

I’m not sure what is unlikely.  I’m always fascinated by construction and how things are made, but that’s part of my job.  I’m fascinated with systems, especially natural/environmental ones.  Connections, I like to follow the threads.

The poem that touches your soul…

One that I often come back to is The Waste Land by TS Elliot.

“April is the cruellest month, breeding

Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing

Memory and desire, stirring

Dull roots with spring rain.”

The POWER of the lines of this poem.  The passages of this poem have inspired scenes or they’ve sparked the core of a character, etc..  Love it.

The event that altered the course of your life…

My first ‘real’ job out of college.  It moved me across the state to a city where I knew nobody.  And that was probably very good for me.  It’s always a wonder to have a clean slate.  I won’t say that I redefined myself, because at the core of it, I’m still and always will be the same person, but I no longer had to ‘put up’ with things.  And moving to a new place always boosts one’s energy to go out and meet new people, try new things, go to new places.  Now, I’ve been here for over 20 years and I haven’t done too much new!

The happiest moment you will cherish forever…

One of my happier memories – I went to a Harry Potter convention in New Orleans, back in 2007.  I was a big fan and I knew people online through Livejournal.  I show up, and there’s all these other fans and Whammy, Just Like That, we were all friends.  Everyone included everyone.  We talked, ate, went on the tours and to the lectures, and it was like the most accepted I’d ever felt.  I was a part of something grand.  That was a very fun weekend and one I still cherish.  (I imagine this is just generally how popular people feel. Ha!) I’d gone to a few others after that, but nothing compared to Phoenix Rising.

The unfulfilled ambition that continues to haunt you…

There are many.  One of the bigger ones is that I’ve always wanted to live overseas.  I almost moved to Japan to teach English, but didn’t follow through.  I am now plotting that for retirement, but we’ll see what life brings us.

And the promo…

Blooded comes out on September 25!  It’s is a contemporary fantasy with a thick romantic subplot involving a vampire and mage.  There are heavy doses of angst and a redemption arc.  All of my favorites!  Byron (the vampire) and Nick (the mage) are battling against an evil megalomaniac (heroes need an evil counterpart – Sauron, Voldemort, Palpatine) to assure he doesn’t gain enough power to rule the world.  The real story is about the characters learning to live with the lives the dice have given them.  The dice don’t seem to be kind, but there is often a silver lining.

The seeds of the novel were inspired by a poem: The Old Astronomer by Sarah Williams.  The quote that drew me to write this story is listed in the opening to the novel, but I’ll share it here.  “Though my soul may set in darkness, it will rise in perfect light.  I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night.”  I read this excerpt in another angsty book, and it just struck me as VAMPIRE.  Then I stared thinking of the stars and loving them.  That helped me devise my magical system, which takes power from the stars.  It’s amazing how one little thing like a poem sparks an entire novel.  But, that’s where it came from.

Plus, I wanted to write steamy vampire feeding scenes.

It was wonderful to stop by and share a little about myself with your followers.  Thanks for having me!

Thank you, Nat. It was lovely to hear more about you.

 Excerpt

He walked through the mists, gaze scanning the trees and bushes lining the path. Judging by the colour of the leaves and the bounty of fruit, the seasons still aligned on both sides of the veil, though the time of day did not. He’d left the human realm in the late afternoon, yet here it appeared to be early morning. And something—or someone—called to him.

There were no words, just a powerful tug on his awareness. A tug that made him want to follow the path, walk faster, run—

He stopped.

Breathed.

The tug eased a fraction, but didn’t disappear.

“Who are you and what do you want?” The trees swallowed Rakurai’s question and returned no answer. Could this be the rafeet’s doing? Did it have the power to make Rakurai rush headlong into a trap? He’d never read of such a skill.

He took a careful step forward.

The tug eased a little more.

He took a step back the way he’d come.

The tug grew stronger.

“Understood,” he said, irony strong in his voice. He had to find the rafeet, but he could spare some time to see what other creature had need of him.

He followed the path, watching the bark of the trees, the grass, and the rushes underfoot for signs of the rafeet’s passing. There weren’t any now. The demon wouldn’t hunt on its own turf, and it would take care not to lead a hunter to its lair.

It grew warmer as Rakurai walked, and the sun had passed its zenith when he topped a ridge overlooking a manor house set in a neat pattern of fields. The dwelling looked much like his own: three wings of rooms arranged around a courtyard, dark wooden beams on foundations of rough stone, with a veranda edging each wing, and shoji screens hiding the interior from view.

Servants passed back and forth, and Rakurai saw people tending the fields. He thought about approaching openly, like a traveller looking for a place to rest, but finally dismissed the idea. Instead, he slept the afternoon away, up on his ridge, then slid through the fields under cover of dusk, found a sheltered spot beside the house, and waited for full darkness.

The statue in the courtyard had drawn him here, he realised as he came closer. Shaped like a tall man with long flowing hair, it stood on a plinth surrounded by water. The artist had caught each swirl of robes and hair with precision, as if the figure walked in a light breeze and was just about to take the next step. It was an exceptional work, worthy of an emperor’s court, and Rakurai wondered who had stolen it, and why.

He waited until a cloud dimmed the moonlight, then crossed the courtyard to get as close to the sculpture as he could.

The statue regarded him from glowing violet eyes, and the moment their gazes connected a voice, deep and commanding, rang in Rakurai’s mind.

Get me out of here!

Rakurai recoiled so hard he almost landed on his arse. He’d not had another’s voice in his mind since Naomi’s death and the sudden command—and command it had been—came as a shock. He wrapped himself in mist, hoping to hide his hasty movements, and heard a chuckle.

I can still see you, Yuvine.

I wasn’t hiding from you, Rakurai thought, using the same pathways he’d have used to talk to Naomi. It didn’t feel as strange as he’d expected.

You don’t need to try so hard, either. I’m not deaf.

What are you?

Can’t you tell? The sculpture shot back, its eyes flashing violet.

Only death gods, Shinigami, had violet eyes. Rakurai had never met a death god. Or thought that they stood frozen on plinths, surrounded by water.

And then it all came together.

A demon trap.

Yes. The voice held so much sorrow that tears gathered in the corners of Rakurai’s eyes. It caught me as I was returning from a soul collection.

Rakurai could fill in the rest for himself. If the Shinigami had gathered souls that had died in fear and pain, he’d have appeared like a walking banquet to the rafeet. It wants the souls.

It will not have them, the god said. Even if it keeps me trapped here for the rest of my years. Are you hunting the rafeet?

I am.

Then you can help me escape this prison and we can defeat it together.

Why would I do that?

Because if you try it alone, you will fail. This rafeet isn’t like the others.

Rakurai hesitated. It was common knowledge that Shinigami valued truth and honour above all other traits. Despite that, his teachers had warned him to mistrust the gods and never to do their bidding.

Help me out of this trap and I will grant you a boon of your choosing, the Shinigami offered as if he had heard Rakurai’s thoughts.

Rakurai stared into the glowing violet eyes and recalled the hint of mirth when the god had first spoken to him. Any being capable of mirth while caught in a rafeet’s trap deserved his respect and his help. He drew a deep breath. I am Yamakage Rakurai, hunter for the Custodia, he offered. And gathered all his courage. Will you honour me with your name?

The impression of a smile came to him first, comforting like a cool wash of summer rain on parched ground. Then the Shinigami’s chuckle sent shivers rippling over Rakurai’s skin. You are a brave man, Yamakage Rakurai, to trust me with your name. Such bravery shall not go unrewarded. Again, Rakurai felt the smile. My name is Tenzen.

About the Author

Jackie Keswick was born behind the Iron Curtain with itchy feet, a bent for rocks and a recurring dream of stepping off a bus in the middle of nowhere to go home. She’s worked in a hospital and as the only girl with 52 men on an oil rig, spent a winter in Moscow and a summer in Iceland and finally settled in the country of her dreams with her dream team: a husband, a cat, a tandem, a hammer and a laptop.

Jackie loves unexpected reunions and second chances, and men who write their own rules. She blogs about English history and food, has a thing for green eyes, and is a great believer in making up soundtracks for everything, including her characters and the cat.

And she still hasn’t found the place where the bus stops.

For questions and comments, not restricted to green eyes, bus stops or recipes for traditional English food, you can find Jackie Keswick in all the usual places:

Author Interview – When We Were Young Series Tour by Maggie Blackbird #giveaway

SERIES TOUR

Series Title:  When We Were Young by Maggie Blackbird

I thought I saved you, but maybe you saved me too.

Series Blurb

At their Ojibway community, Billy Redsky, a drug-dealing punk, and René Oshawee, the chief’s haughty son, must walk the “red road” to finally confront their biggest fears:  conquering the self-imposed obstacles in their path, if they are to have what they long for above anything else—to finally be together.

The stories need to be read in order.  None of the books are standalones.

INTERVIEW WITH MAGGIE BLACKBIRD

The prized possession you value above all others…

Maggie:  My desktop. This is where I do most of my writing and writing-related work.

The temptation you wish you could resist…

Maggie:  Potato chips.  I am a chipaholic.

The film you can watch time and time again…

Maggie:  Mad Max II aka The Road Warrior.

Your favourite hobby…

Maggie:  Golf.  Playing and watching.

The person who influenced you the most…

Maggie:  My parents.

The unlikely interest that engages your curiosity…

Maggie:  True crime.  Don’t ask.  But I am fascinated with the stuff, even when it scares me sometimes.

The event that altered the course of your life…

Maggie:  Meeting my husband.  He’s a good man.  I’m glad I married him.  And I’m happy with the direction my life took because of him.

The song that means the most to you…

Maggie:  The Wreck of Sloop John B.  It was a song my father was known to play during his younger days.

The happiest moment you will cherish forever…

Maggie:  The births of my nieces and nephews and my grandnieces.

The unfulfilled ambition that continues to haunt you…

Maggie:  I shoulda been a pro golfer or a tour caddy for a pro!  LOL.

Your early recollections of writing fiction…

Maggie:  A disaster, but I had fun doing it!

The way you would spend your fantasy twenty-four hours, with no travel restrictions…

Maggie:  Golfing all those wonderful golf courses I see on the European Tour!  I’m talking Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Australia.  Of course my golfing partners would be my husband and my mother.

The figure from history you would most like to buy a pie and a pint…

Maggie:  Mawindobinesse.

The philosophy that underpins your life…

Maggie:  Live each day as if it was your last.

The character you enjoyed writing the most…

Maggie:  Billy Redsky from the When We Were Young series

The character you found difficult to write…

Maggie:  Emery Matawapit from the Matawapit Family series

The book you enjoyed planning/writing the most…

Maggie:  When We Were Young series

And the promo…

All I can say is this series was never supposed to happen.  At the time, I was writing a different m/m series, but for some reason René Oshawee (a minor character in the other series) stuck with me.  So I started a novel for René featuring Billy Redsky.  Billy told me in order to properly to tell their story I’d have to go back to “when they were young.”  Hence the series title name.  Their novel wound up being four books all because of Billy.  Way to go, Billy!

Thank you for taking time to answer these prompts, Maggie.

For one vampire, finding his mate is far easier than convincing him Fate is real.

Blurb

A shrewd business owner, Vampyr Lord Nikolai Volkov has one of the most powerful companies on the planet. Besides success, Nikolai has a loving family that leads the vampires, but he aches to find his mate. Although Nikolai is proud to be a vampire, he begs Fate to bring him someone to adore—someone who can quench his need for blood. Nikolai believes his other half will be a human, and he’ll stop at nothing to find him.

James Chase swore off love, marriage, and any romantic entanglements at twenty-two when he discovered his boyfriend cheating on him. His father tried to dictate his future, so James left him behind too. Over a decade later, James is a hard-working and successful man who allows no one to impact his feelings. Like every human he knows, James prefers to ignore the Council of Sorcery and Shifters.

At a party James attends to satisfy his sister, he meets a vampire who insists they are mates. James knows little and cares nothing about the people in the Council. Despite Nikolai’s best efforts, James refuses to be swept off his feet. Torn between their two vastly different worlds, Nikolai must convince James that Fate is real if they are to honor her. But first, the vampire will need to persuade the other half of his soul to give their relationship a chance.

Excerpt

“I really appreciate you agreeing to have dinner with me tonight.”

“You left me with little choice,” James stated, picking up his fork and forcefully spearing a slice of cucumber. “Not only did you call my assistant on multiple occasions, but you tried to fill my office with flowers and other junk. You need to stop sending me things immediately.”

“I apologize if I’ve made you uncomfortable. I’m possibly overzealous, but I have waited over a thousand years for you.”

“Excuse me?”

“Did you read the book I sent, Jamie?”

“It’s James, and no, I work for a living. I don’t have time to read books, nor do I care at all about your Council.”

It was the truth, or at least the one James wanted to believe. His curiosity was easily squelched, or so James told himself. The way the book on his coffee table beckoned to him was a secret he’d never share. Whatever attraction he felt for Nikolai had to be ignored, no matter how gorgeous the vampire was.

Nikolai frowned. “I was hoping you’d at least have read the section about mates.”

The Vampyr Lord’s persistence was commendable but annoying. James refused to give in to the newfound interest he might have about Nikolai’s world, and he wondered how the vampire could be so sure of his pursuit of James. Slapping on the stare he gave an underperforming employee, James’s gaze met Nikolai’s head on.

“Why, so I’d understand whatever relationship your butler and chauffer have? Nikolai, I’m here to tell you to stop contacting me, not because I want to be friends.”

The disappointment on Nikolai’s face was unmistakable, and James wondered why his immediate reaction was to soothe the vampire. The feeling was unexpected and unwelcome.

“I suppose there’s no delicate way to explain matebonds or Fate to a human.”

“Are you really going to try that whole line about how fate brought us together?” James asked with a forced laugh. “I didn’t expect someone as successful as you to have your head stuck in clouds. I at least expected you to have enough experience to know that tired clichés rarely work.”

“The Council of Sorcery and Shifters is comprised of races who share a single thing in common. We were granted gifts from Fate,” Nikolai explained quietly. “For some, they wield magic, or can shift into a beast. I was given immortality, the ability to teleport, and other talents. Because we live for so long, she also matches us with someone who is our perfect complement. If they find themselves willing and able to build a relationship, they bond with blood or bite, which unites them for eternity.

“There are signals to tell us when we’ve met that person. It varies but often consists of a strong scent associated with that person and instant sexual attraction. I saw the surprise on your face. I know you felt it,” Nikolai insisted, his pale eyes boring into James’s in an unwavering way that made James uncomfortable.

Was it possible for Nikolai to see through James’s hard-earned mask?

James had no idea how Nikolai knew about the roses that even at the moment he could smell wafting off the vampire, or the inopportune erection he’d had at his sister’s party, but perhaps mind reading was one of his gifts. A sense of fear swept through him at the thought of pissing off the vampire, as he had no clue what Nikolai was capable of, but he quickly dismissed it. Nothing about Nikolai gave the impression he’d lash out.

“I’m not a fan of organized religion, nor do I believe in God,” James said. “I’m not judging you because you’re a believer or because you’re part of a larger religious structure, but you can’t expect me to start a relationship with you because some book told you that you’d meet your match someday. Maybe it’s a completely legitimate foundation, but I can assure you that I’m not your perfect complement.”

“Our belief in Fate is not a religion. There is no faith necessary. I’m clearly a vampire, and I’m surrounded by happy mates bonded by blood and bite. It’s a tangible thing and is explained clearly in the book I sent over.”

“Which I already told you I’m not going to read.” The Council continued to hold no interest to a man whose life wouldn’t intersect with magickind, shifters, or sexy vampires, no matter how much they might appeal. If James kept repeating it, he’d get the courage to toss the book Nikolai wanted him to read in the trash, or so he hoped.

“I suppose it would be asking too much to expect Fate to grant me someone far less stubborn than myself,” Nikolai muttered.

For a moment James had to question whether the beautiful and enticing man was unhinged. “Have you ever spoken with a professional?”

“I’m not crazy, Jamie.”

About the Author

Brought up in a relatively small town in Hertfordshire, C F White managed to do what most other residents try to do and fail—leave.

Studying at a West London university, she realised there was a whole city out there waiting to be discovered, so, much like Dick Whittington before her, she never made it back home and still endlessly search for the streets paved with gold, slowly coming to the realisation they’re mostly paved with chewing gum. And the odd bit of graffiti. And those little circles of yellow spray paint where the council point out the pot holes to someone who is supposedly meant to fix them instead of staring at them vacantly whilst holding a polystyrene cup of watered-down coffee.

Eventually she moved West to East along that vast District Line and settled for pie and mash, cockles and winkles and a bit of Knees Up Mother Brown to live in the East End of London; securing a job and creating a life, a home and a family.

After her second son was born with a rare disability, C F White’s life changed and it brought pen back to and paper after having written stories as a child but never had the confidence to show them to the world. Now, having embarked on this writing journey, C F White can’t stop.

So strap in, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

If Nao’s father had kept the drug key in his office desk, what horrors would Nao find once he stepped foot into his father’s home? Nao would rather keep them buried for as long as possible.

Kurosawa knotted the gauze wraps with a tight jerk of his wrist. “The least you could do is not fuck a new recruit at headquarters. It makes it uncomfortable for everyone.”

“What are you talking about?”

“Last night with Hisona.”

“Hisona?” Nao blinked.

“You don’t even know his name? The whole house could hear you screw him all night.”

Hisona was much too forceful of a name and didn’t match Aki’s personality at all. So of course he’d forget it.  Apparently Aki could act enough to keep the whole household convinced. With only four days left before jail time, Nao was bound to need Aki’s acting skills again.

Nao grinned. “Aki really knew how to take it. Those recruits are so eager to please.”

“If you want to fuck one, take them to a hotel.”

Nao tried not to laugh at Kurosawa’s reddening face. If it was out of embarrassment or anger, Nao didn’t know, but either way he enjoyed it.

“Taking the time to go to a hotel would’ve killed the mood.” Nao trailed a hand down his own neck to his collarbone. “Have you ever been with a man, Kurosawa? They know exactly what to do during a blowjob.”

Kurosawa puffed out his cheeks. “Couldn’t you go back to the brothel?”

“I thought you’d enjoy me staying in for once. Besides, you’re not in a position to talk to me this way.”

Kurosawa gritted his teeth. “What I’m doing is for the good of the Matsukawa as a whole.”

“You should respect me more as the godfather of this syndicate.”

“Someone has to tell you what everyone is thinking.”

“Good thing they’re not speaking it because I’d punch them in the face. With you, I’m satisfied seeing you get demoted to cutting up dead bodies and burning the Matsukawa furnace once you’re replaced.”

“I’ll be more than happy to do any task that benefits the family.”

Nao laughed and grabbed his phone. He frowned; there were still no new messages from Kohta, which didn’t put him any closer to finding the dealer.

“Fujimoto called last night about a disturbance in his ward.” Nao grinned. “I was in the middle of getting a blowjob, so I told him to handle it. I want to make sure Fujimoto wasn’t an idiot.”

Blurb

He put me on edge before he even cruised into town with his cowboy hat, devil-may-care grin, and Southern drawl. Partly because I couldn’t help viewing him as a threat. He was my best friend’s brother—and maybe more importantly, the uncle of Teddy, a special kid who’d been the light of my life for years.

Teddy couldn’t be more excited about his uncle visiting. Me…not so much. No matter how intensely the chemistry sizzled between us when we met, no matter how much my chest seized up at the sight of him, no matter how easily he drew me in.

He could return to his closet in Georgia for all I cared, preferably before I lost my ever-loving mind and had to wage war against the man who somehow got under my skin.

About the Author

Romance Across the Spectrum.

I’m often awkwardly silent or, if the topic interests me, a chronic rambler. In other words, I can discuss writing forever and ever. Fiction, in particular. The love story—while a huge draw and constantly present—is secondary for me, because there’s so much more to writing romance fiction than just making two (or more) people fall in love and have hot sex.

There’s a world to build, characters to develop, interests to create, and a topic or two to research thoroughly.

Every book is a challenge for me, an opportunity to learn something new, and a puzzle to piece together. I want my characters to come to life, and the only way I know to do that is to give them substance—passions, history, goals, quirks, and strong opinions—and to let them evolve.

I want my men and women to be relatable. That means allowing room for everyday problems and, for lack of a better word, flaws. My characters will never be perfect.

Wait…this was supposed to be about me, not my writing.

I’m a writey person who loves to write. Always wanderlusting, twitterpating, kinking, cooking, baking, and geeking. There’s time for hockey and family, too. But mostly, I just love to write.

~Cara.

I need to face her–and save my dignity.

But a little backup won’t hurt, right?

My roommate is the perfect wingman.

Rhett is assertive and charismatic. The kind of guy people respect.

And when he meets my toxic ex, he’s also the kind of guy to get protective.

I take comfort in his strength, even as I envy it.

But when he kisses me, things get awkward.

Frustrated by the tension between us, I turn to a hookup app for answers.

I don’t mean to proposition my roommate. Really.

It’s just a weird fluke–a mortifying one.

But Rhett has a proposition of his own.

He wants to help me explore my curiosity.

But he’s a bartender who practically flirts for a living, and I’m in way over my head.

It could all end in heartbreak.

Unless I find the courage I’ve been seeking my whole life.

Can I be bold enough to ask Rhett Hayes to be mine?

Tapped By My Roommate is Book 3 of the Thrust into Love series featuring a flirty bartender, a timid but passionate geek, and a mistaken app hookup that encourages these two roommates to explore friendship and love. It can be read as a standalone.

ETHAN

“Rhett, please…” I shifted my hips restlessly.

“Yes? Did you want something?” he asked in his husky sex voice designed to drive me wild. I was onto him. He did that on purpose.

It was a Thursday evening, and I’d dressed down in a pair of sweats and a T-shirt, thinking I’d be spending the night alone. He’d traded shifts with someone, though, and here we were on the futon again—with me desperate and him teasing me.

Without the bowtie, Rhett had zeroed in on my throat. He sucked my Adam’s apple, making me jolt. “Say it, Ethan. I promise I want to hear it.”

“Did you know alligators are always erect?” I blurted.

Rhett lifted his head to look at me.

Jesus, why did I say that?

“Really?”

“They keep it tucked inside their body, but yeah. Always ready to go.” I snorted an awkward laugh. “You’re probably wondering why I’m sharing alligator sex trivia right now.”

Rhett held up his thumb and forefinger a millimeter apart. “A little bit.”

“Sorry.”

“Don’t be. I find it strangely hot.”

“Yeah? Some lizards change their sex based on climate,” I said. “Males become female.”

“Okay, I like your equipment, so that’s less hot.” His hand finally cupped my hard dick through my pants. “Stay hard like an alligator for me.”

I groaned. That would be no trouble. It seemed as if I was hard for Rhett all the time, even when he wasn’t there.

“Love your lizard,” he whispered into my ear.

I giggled—straight up giggled like a child—and my whole body flashed hot. It was embarrassing and funny and…a tiny bit sexy that he was willing to take my geeky, nervous babble and roll with it.

“Did you know that some animals engage in oral sex of sorts?” I said. “Cheetahs and lions—”

“Ethan,” he cut in. “Is this your way of asking me to suck your dick?”

“Oh, god.”

His voice went even huskier. “Because I would love to do that for you. I just need to hear that you want it.”

Reed helps Peter realize that there is life and love after a life and career-changing accident.

Blurb

At just 28, Peter is one of the youngest athletes ever to secure a spot on Team USA’s Show Jumping roster for the Paris Summer Olympics. With the support a large, equestrian-centric family behind him Peter’s a shoo-in to win individual gold—

—until a freak on-course accident badly injures Peter and the talented mare he’d been riding. Dreams of success in Paris quickly coming apart, he holes up at the family complex, Tulip Farm, to rehab and re-assess. His parents and three siblings try to keep his spirits up, but it’s hard to focus on the future when by night he’s plagued by reoccurring headaches and by day he can barely walk without pain.

Reed Androku has recently chosen to follow their passion: holistic equine rehabilitation. Tulip Farm – an immaculate facility run by the famous McAuley-Griffin clan – seems the perfect place to chase that dream, and when the family unexpectedly opens up Barn A to boarders, Reed jumps at the opportunity. They’ll happily take advantage of roomy stalls, heated arena, and state-of-the-art footing even if it means putting up with Peter Griffin, the family’s youngest son and ex-Olympic hopeful.

Peter needs healing, and a reason to hope. Reed’s got a knack for rehab and a soft-heart for hard cases, but they also have a dangerous secret. Fate throws Peter and Reed together, sparking a passion that could turn into something deeper, but first they must weather Peter’s recovery, the McAuley-Griffin family’s obsessive need to meddle, and Reed’s violent past.

Excerpt

As far as Peter was concerned, the only thing of worth he could ever be was an Olympic show jumper.

He’d been born into it, after all. His mum was a McAuley. County Kildare stock, and for as far back as anyone bothered to keep track, the County Kildare McAuleys had been horse people. Peter’s maternal grandfather and granduncle had made their fortunes breeding and racing thoroughbreds in Ireland. Peter’s mum, Aine McAuley, was a track rat grown into Ireland’s most decorated eventing star. And Peter’s dad, though no County Kildare McAuley, had plenty of horse chops of his own. Gabe Griffin had ridden to team gold for Great Britain in Barcelona, the same Olympics Aine had tried—and failed by the slimmest margin—to bring home an individual medal for Ireland.

She always said she’d regretted the miss for exactly forty-five seconds, the time it had taken to dismount after her stadium round, toss her reins at her cousin and stand-in groom, Finley, and glance past her disappointed family at the young man with the salt-and-pepper hair watching from the shadows of the ingate.

That young man was Peter’s da. He’d come over from the Olympic stables to get a glimpse of the McAuley winning machine at work and instead found himself captured by a pair of wide violet eyes over a petulant, spoiled mouth. Gabe had already heard more than a few things about Aine McAuley. Her easy way with horses, her exacting eye for breed lines. Her tendency to collect suitors like candy and toss them away again, half-consumed. And her—possibly obsessive—drive for excellence in all things.

“Bad luck,” he’d famously dared say with typical British aplomb and specific Gabe Griffin bluntness as those furious violet eyes attempted to flay him from a distance for the sin of witnessing a McAuley nonperformance. “But not entirely your fault. He’s off in the right hind, don’t you know, just the barest whisper but enough to send him flat over the last three and cost you the time faults.” Hands in his pockets, he shrugged when all three McAuleys glared at him in disbelief. “Like I said, just the barest whisper, easy for even the best of us to miss, but I saw it from up in the risers. If I were you, I’d have him looked at immediately.”

“What the hell do you know about it?” Aine’s father and coach, Shane, had blustered. Gabe was quite clearly wearing the track jacket of a British Olympian and a color-coded tag on a lanyard around his neck that meant he had unrestricted access to the Olympic barns, but that wasn’t necessarily a point in his favor. Quite the opposite, in fact. “And why in God’s name should we listen to the competition?”

Gabe shrugged again. He hadn’t reached so far in life by backing down. “For the horse’s sake, I imagine. He’s a brave fellow, and bold. No matter the gruff show you put on for the papers, Shane McAuley, we each of us know the animal’s welfare comes first, and a bit of healthy competition won’t change that.”

At last those remarkable violet eyes softened.

“The Olympics are hardly ‘a bit of healthy competition,’ Mr. Griffin,” Aine said softly, her accent rolling pleasantly with the music of Ireland. “But you’re not wrong. Oh, stop snarling, Da. I felt it when we landed fence six. A stinger, and after that he couldn’t balance up. Poor Ross.” She stroked the chestnut gelding’s neck. The horse, still blowing hard, sniffed hopefully at her gloved hand in search of a sugar cube. “Let’s hope it’s not lasting.” She tugged a sugar cube from her breeches pocket, smiled a challenge at Gabe. “Right hind, you say? Well. Why don’t you come back with me to the warm-up ring and we’ll look him over.”

They were married less than a year later, and just like any sport horse carefully bred to succeed, Peter’s fate—and that of his three older siblings—was sealed.

***

“Beautiful day for a ride,” Kate Griffin told Peter cheerfully, smoothing long dark hair back from her forehead and securing it into a high ponytail with an elastic slipped from her wrist.

It was the same thing his older sister said before every first round, the same thing she’d said when they were children and he’d ridden his pony, Cricket, for the first time at Devon while she stood at the ingate, all pigtails and wide eyes and quiet confidence, and he’d won the class blue. It didn’t matter whether they were indoors or out, whether he was showing first thing in the a.m. or after dark in the p.m., whether the sun was shining, or they were in the middle of a blizzard. Horse people were a superstitious sort and the Irish a superstitious people, which meant Kate and Peter Griffin were superstitious twice over and just fine with it.

“Remember,” Kate continued as she stepped sideways to avoid being trampled by Annie’s eager, dancing trot. “Six and Seven come up quick, balance her back. And Five will take some leg, what with the Liverpool, and we know how she feels about water in the indoor, poor Annie. She’s not alone. Other people are having trouble.”

“A son! A child! How? Why? Fuck! Phil! You can’t have! And does this sperm-child want to see you?”

Blurb

“A son! A child! How? Why? Fuck! Phil! You can’t have! And does this sperm-child want to see you?”

Abandonment, trust, suspicion and compromise—integral parts of a mystery that involves industrial espionage, sperm donation and coming to terms with oneself and the truth.

Sperm donors know that now, under UK law, offspring who reach eighteen have the right to learn a donor’s identity and last known address, but Phil Roberts donated before the law was changed. He is shocked and dismayed to learn that he has a son called Lewis who intends to visit. Phil’s husband, Raith, is furious—and very scared.

What does Lewis Lennon really want? The man he has always called ‘dad’ is dead. Was his death suicide or was he murdered? Lewis wants Phil to find out. So, Phil, Raith, Mike and Ross, the County Durham Quad, plus their special friend, Nick, are embroiled in another investigation, but, as always, their relationships come under scrutiny too.

Excerpt

Phil sat at the big kitchen table. His beard, neatly trimmed as always, failed to hide the lack of colour in his face. He looked shocked. He was holding a letter.

“You alright, Phil?” Mike was puzzled and concerned. “Bad news?”

“Not ‘bad’ exactly. Unexpected. Very.” He sighed. “I’ve an eighteen-year-old son. Sperm donation.”

Raith, Phil’s husband, dropped the glass of juice he was drinking. It rolled off the table and smashed as it hit the floor.

“A son! A child! How? Why? Fuck! Phil! You can’t have! And does this sperm-child want to see you?” Raith snatched the letter from Phil’s hands. “I can’t read this fucking stuff; it’s in joined-up. Why didn’t he type it?”

“He probably felt that this was more personal,” Mike suggested, retrieving the letter from the floor where Raith had slung it in disgust and shaking it free of orange juice.

“It’s fucking personal alright. You always said they couldn’t identify you, Phil. What the fuck’s gone wrong?”

“It looks as though we might find out,” said Ross, the fourth member of the quad. He was reading the letter over Mike’s shoulder. “He intends to visit. I think we need to talk.”

***

Mike, Ross, Raith and Phil, four men who shared a home in Tunhead, a tiny hamlet in the Durham hills. Tunhead derived its name from Tun Beck, a little stream that flowed into the larger River Wear. Tun Beck lent its name to BOTWAC too—the Beck on the Wear Arts Centre. Ross managed BOTWAC, Raith provided paintings and ceramics and Mike carried out the maintenance. Phil was the only one whose work was separate. He was a surgeon at Warbridge Hospital, an hour’s drive away and, in a sense, his medical background was the cause of the morning’s shock announcement. The four of them talked about the news that evening.

“You knew I’d donated sperm, Raith.” Phil had always made it clear that when he was a medical student, like many others on his course, he had donated both for research and for procreation.

“I know that, but you’d always done it anonymously. You said so, and you never did it after they changed the law.”

Raith was referring to a change that occurred in 2005 regarding data held at UK fertility clinics. At licenced clinics, that is. Prior to the change, offspring conceived by sperm or egg donation could learn some information about their donor when they reached sixteen, but what was released was very general. If donors wished to remain anonymous, they could do so. From 2005, though, anonymity was lifted. Sixteen was still the age of release of the ‘non-identifiable information’, but at eighteen, offspring conceived by donation had the right to be told their donor’s name and date of birth and, also, their donor’s last known address.

“I didn’t donate after two thousand and five. I think I’d know if I did.”

“Sperm can be frozen though, can’t it, Phil? Perhaps it was used after the change was implemented.”

“Only for another year or so, Ross, and under the old anonymity rules. There was a transitional period but, after that, sperm could only be used in exceptional circumstances. To create a sibling, for example. I remember being contacted about it. I had the option of… going public, if you like, but I chose not to do so. I didn’t want…I didn’t want a child, well, not one that I’d feel some responsibility for. I suppose, if I’m honest, I did want to pass on my genes, have that sense of immortality—I knew it was unlikely that I’d ever father a child with a woman. I just wanted to… be helpful, I suppose. I gave a brief self-description at the time, but the details would apply to thousands of people: eyes, hair, height, weight, ethnicity. Even if you narrowed the count with ‘student medic’ and my year of birth, you’d still be talking hundreds. I was careful not to leave traces.”

   “How thoughtful of you!”

   “That’s not helpful, Raith.”

Ross chastised gently but, tonight, too harshly for Raith.

“Helpful! It’s not help Phil needs—it’s a fucking vasectomy, but he’s eighteen years too late. I’m going up.”

No hugs, no kisses—the little goodnight habits that told the men that they were loved and cared for and cared about. Just “I’m going up” and heavy footsteps on the stairs.

Excerpt

A strange excitement coursed through him that James couldn’t explain. Lifting his head, his gaze locked with the most handsome man James had ever seen. His raven hair fell in loose layers nearly to his collar, and his face was a study of elegance with high cheekbones and a firm jaw. The smile he was wearing was almost intimate, as if they were lovers, but James didn’t even know his name.

When Vivian wrapped herself around his arm, James had an overwhelming urge to push her off the man. His sister was chatting, but the stranger never stopping staring at James. As he drew closer, James saw warmth in his pale blue gaze and nearly returned his grin. Then, James noticed the fangs.

Disappointment coursed through him, and he wanted to dismiss the man completely. Although it was technically against the law for a vampire to be on human land, James was like everyone else he knew and didn’t bother alerting the authorities on the extremely rare occasions when he encountered one.

Perhaps the vampire understood no one would dare cross a woman like Vivian, who was so connected in DC circles, by phoning the police when he showed up, or maybe the man was arrogant enough to flaunt his rebellion of the treaty.

“Vampyr Lord Nikolai Volkov, this is my brother, James Chase,” Vivian said, stopping a few feet from James with a vampire at her side.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Chase,” Nikolai remarked, holding out his hand.

Although there was a war going on inside him over whether it was smart to touch the vampire, James greeted him with a handshake. “The pleasure is mine, Vampyr Lord.”

“Please, call me Nikolai.”

Something about the Vampyr Lord made James want to smile at him, but he clenched his jaw instead and yanked his hand away. The vampire was stunningly gorgeous, and while James’s hormones were screaming at him to ogle the man, he refused to give in to his baser instincts. James also refused to be enticed by him, no matter how badly he might yearn to touch and taste him.

“Play nice, gentlemen,” Vivian murmured. “The caterer needs me. I’ll be right back.”

The second Vivian scurried off, James scowled and took a gulp of his wine while he willed his errant body to get itself under control. There weren’t even any roses in sight, so James had no clue why the scent wouldn’t leave, but at least his cock was no longer tenting his trousers to the same extent.

“There are plenty of people eager to meet you, Vampyr Lord,” James said. “I won’t keep you.”

“I suppose I must mingle,” Nikolai mused. “Will you give me your phone number?”

“I don’t think that’s necessary, Vampyr Lord.”

“I disagree. I would like to see you again in a more private setting. I’d like to get to know you.”

The vampire’s arrogance was no longer in question, and James lifted a brow at his audacity. “You run a large company and are probably used to getting what you want, Vampyr Lord, but I’m not interested.”

“Are you sure?”

“What kind of question is that?”

“At least you stopped called me Vampyr Lord,” Nikolai muttered. “I can explain everything, but it’s rather difficult to do it at a party.”

“I can’t decide if you’re overconfident or so used to bending people to your will that you think if you repeat yourself enough, I’ll comply. This is my sister’s party. I’m here under duress. The last thing I’m looking for is to hook up with a vampire. My blood is not for sale, Vampyr Lord.”

It irritated James that Nikolai’s confidence was infinitely attractive. Why arrogance was suddenly a trait that appealed was a mystery to James, but he gave nothing away.

Nikolai’s sensuous mouth pursed, but he offered no other outward clue that James’s rudeness perturbed him. “Mr. Chase, I beg you not to ignore the odd feelings you’re experiencing. I know it must be overwhelming and strange. I’m not trying to bend you to my will. On the contrary, I want to make you happy.”

“Make me happy? You don’t even know me, Vampyr Lord,” James said with a laugh. “I want nothing to do with you. Enjoy the party.”

Excerpt

January sucked. Hayato always started it with a New Year’s hangover. Then came the anniversary of the worst day of his life. And that wasn’t including the cold. At least the snow was pretty sometimes, but January storms usually skipped the happily-ever-after fluffy snow and went straight to freezing rain of doom. No matter how many layers Hayato wore, he always froze his balls off. The whole month should be tossed out like a used condom in a love hotel’s trash.

If he stayed in bed, he could pretend the calendar had never turned. He could go back to sweet December when nothing bad ever happened and the world was a blur of sales and romantic dinners. Or maybe he could stick with his current plan to spend the whole month of January drunk until the thirty-one days of hell passed and February dawned, if not warmer, at least a little brighter.

He hugged his pillow closer, then gagged, his sinuses assaulted by the stench of sweat and cum. Like the hangover wasn’t bad enough. Only January 1 and already the month had lived up to its reputation as the one of suffering and hatred.

Hayato threw the pillow off the bed and rolled onto his back. Furry pink walls shocked any remaining sleep out of his system. The matching sheets and heart-shaped tufted headboard confirmed it. He’d spent the night at a love hotel. No big deal. No one wanted to spend New Year’s alone. The sound of rushing water in the bathroom signaled Hayato needed to leave before things got complicated.

Akira Kazama is a man that gets what he wants. A loan shark king affiliated with the yakuza, he practically runs the money game in Tokyo.

Sora Nakano wants to save his mother’s life. When he has no choice left but to take out a hefty loan for her medical bills, he becomes indebted to Akira.

For Akira, business is always strictly business. And when someone owes him money, he always collects. Except this time, he wants more than just money from Sora.

He wants his body.

They agree on an arrangement for Sora to pay off the debt, and it’s supposed to be a win-win situation for them both. But Sora never wanted to be involved with the dark, hidden side of Akira’s life, and when Sora is threatened, he must turn to Akira for help.

Will Sora save his mother and get out of this alive? Or will he spiral down the path of dark money love?

Excerpt

Why was Akira looking at him like that? That intense gaze made Sora’s stomach churn. When Akira’s eyes swept over his body, Sora shifted in his seat. Akira was a handsome man, and Sora wasn’t used to this type of attention. The silence was unsettling, suffocating, and Sora was drowning in it.

“I have nothing,” Sora said, his voice broken.

“So…you don’t have any personal belongings worth enough to sell, no job or income. And…based on your file, you live in an internet café, correct?”

Sora nodded, his head down. He felt shame, sharp and searing like razor blades in his veins. What would his mother say if she saw him now? He was an embarrassment.

“Why an internet café?”

Sora shrugged. “Rent is cheap.”

“What did you spend all that money on?” Akira asked.

Sora didn’t speak. He stared down at his shaking hands, his eyes burning with impending tears. He sniffled, cheeks hot and breathing laboured.

“How will you pay off your debt?” Akira asked.

“I don’t know,” Sora whispered. Tears spilled onto his cheeks, but he didn’t bother to wipe them away.

“At this rate, your debt will triple by the end of the month. And with no sure way to pay it back, it’ll be far worse than what it already is.”

Sora started to sob. He kept his head down, tears dropping in big globs onto his jeans, staining the fabric a darker shade of blue.

He couldn’t pay back a thing. What good was he, then?

Would Akira have him killed? Sora wondered where the authorities would find his body once they were done with him.

Akira stood from his chair and rounded the desk. His cologne was intense as he stood next to Sora and wiped the tears off his cheek with the pad of his thumb.

Sora stifled a gasp and looked up at Akira, his eyes wide and bloodshot with tears.

“Crying will not change a thing.”

“Then what do I do?” Sora asked, his voice shaking. He felt like chum in the water.

Akira chuckled, his voice low. “You pay me back.”

“But I already told you I can’t pay you back. I have nothing.”

“Yes, you do. You have yourself.”

“What do you mean?”

He saw it then, the smirk twisting up at the corner of Akira’s lips. Sora’s cheeks burned, and his stomach squirmed.

“You know what I mean,” Akira said. He walked back to his chair behind the desk and sat down.

Sora frowned. “You can’t expect me to—”

“I expect you to pay me back one way or another, Sora. And since you have nothing else to give me, you can pay back your incurred debt with your body.”

That squirming sensation in the pit of Sora’s stomach worsened. His head spun. Sora wanted to block out Akira’s words, he wanted to get up and run out of the room, but all he could do was sit there, staring.

“Ten thousand yen will be deducted from your account after each service. That is a sure way to settle your debt.”

This didn’t feel real. Akira couldn’t be serious.

“But I can’t do that!” Sora exclaimed.

Akira’s gaze darkened, his voice firm. “You can, and you will. You owe me, Sora. And I’m going to make sure you pay me back.”

“There has to be another way.”

“Like what, Sora? The bank won’t give you a loan, so you can’t give me their money. The government won’t help you. Many people in your position commit suicide, but that would be such a terrible waste. And if you went to the wrong people asking for money and couldn’t pay them back…well…that’s a sure way to get yourself killed.”

Sora stared at Akira. What choice did he have? There was no way Sora could get out of this. If he didn’t want to end up dead on the street, he’d have to go through with it.

Akira watched him, waiting. “So what will it be?”

It all felt surreal, like it wasn’t even happening in the first place.

Sora sniffled and wiped his eyes. He took in a few breaths, trying to calm down. “When…when will we start?”

“Our business arrangement will take effect tomorrow evening if you agree,” Akira said.

Sora hesitated. “Does that mean you’ll sell my body off to anyone and everyone?”

Akira narrowed his eyes. “I am not a pimp, and besides, I don’t like sharing.”

Sora’s cheeks flushed. He let out a shaky breath. What was he getting himself into?

“You’ll be servicing me only,” Akira said.

Sora couldn’t nod. He couldn’t even swallow the damn spit in his mouth, let alone speak. He was stuck, staring into that rapturing gaze. This was it. No turning back.
