Let Your Heart Decide

~Samuel and Thomas~

 With eager tongue and lips,

he plunders my willing mouth, claiming me as his own.

Our desperate kiss is passionate,

proclaiming more than words can impart.

Nipping across my jaw and lapping against my throat,

he marks me as his own with each lust-filled bite.

I surrender to that mouth, those hands,

and his body as it moves over mine.

Happy Release Day!

A warm welcome to Louise Lyons as she stops by on her blog tour of Cervena.

When Joel Jones finds homeless Russian, Sasha, outside his gay nightclub in Prague, he cannot find it in his heart to turn him away, so he offers him a home and a job as a dancer and stripper.

Despite a fifteen-year age gap, romance develops between them, but is interrupted when Joel has to return to England for many weeks to deal with a death in the family.

Upon Joel’s return, he is horrified to discover his business partner, Karel, has gambled away the club’s money and put them all at risk. Joel buys him out of the club, but when Karel continues to gamble, the people he owes pursue Joel for the debt instead—and they’ll stop at nothing to get paid.

Suddenly Joel and those he cares about—especially Sasha—are in danger, and Joel finds himself with no choice but to seek the help of known criminal, Vincenc Jankovic. Ensuring a happy future for himself and Sasha will mean a struggle and some difficult decisions, but Joel is determined to protect what they’ve built together.

“Fucking tease,” Karel responded, taking a step back.

“What the hell is going on?” I demanded. “Sasha?”

Karel muttered something as he walked away, and Sasha gave me a nervous smile. “He, um, he made a pass at me.”

“I saw. Are you okay? Karel can be pushy.” I frowned in concern. It should have occurred to me that Karel would make a move. He made passes at all the dancers at some point. The only surprise was that he’d taken so long to do it with Sasha.

“I’m okay. I told him to fuck off. Shame he doesn’t speak Russian. He probably didn’t get it.” Sasha’s smile became more genuine and his eyes twinkled.

“Oh, I’m pretty sure he got it. He doesn’t like rejection, so he probably won’t bother you again, but let me know if he does.” I made my way back to the bar, where Karel was waiting for a drink, gesturing impatiently at Kris.

“Karel.” I scowled as he turned to look at me.

“What?”

“Leave Sasha alone.”

“Why?” Karel’s lips twitched up at the corners. “You’ve had a month to make your move, but you haven’t tried.”

“I don’t plan to. But I don’t want you messing with him. He’s a sweet boy. He’s not used to all this.”

Karel laughed. “He’s not a boy, Joel, he’s a man. Perfectly capable of saying no if he wants to. Which he did, by the way. So you needn’t worry, I don’t sniff around the same piece of ass twice if I don’t get anywhere the first time. He’s still available for you. But I wouldn’t wait forever.”

My face warmed, and I was grateful for the dimness and colored lights in the club to disguise my discomfort. I did want Sasha, and again I asked myself why I kept my distance. Maybe because I feared he would say no to me as he had to Karel. But my determination to keep away from Sasha diminished every time I saw him.

Louise Lyons comes from a family of writers. Her mother has a number of poems published in poetry anthologies, her aunt wrote poems for the church, and her grandmother sparked her inspiration with tales of fantasy. Louise first ventured into writing short stories at the grand old age of 8, mostly about little girls and ponies. She branched into romance in her teens, and MM romance a few years later, but none of her work saw the light of day until she discovered FanFiction in her late twenties.

Posting stories based on some of her favorite movies, provoked a surprisingly positive response from readers. This gave Louise the confidence to submit some of her work to publishers, and made her take her writing “hobby” more seriously.

Louise lives in the UK, about an hour north of London, with a mad Dobermann, and a collection of tropical fish and tarantulas. She works in the insurance industry by day, and spends every spare minute writing. She is a keen horse-rider, and loves to run long-distance. Some of her best writing inspiration comes to her, when her feet are pounding the open road. She often races into the house afterward, and grabs pen and paper to make notes.

Louise has always been a bit of a tomboy, and one of her other great loves is cars and motorcycles. Her car and bike are her pride and joy, and she loves to exhibit the car at shows, and take off for long days out on the bike, with no one for company but herself.

Review ~ Match Point by Leigh Carman

MatchPointFS

Title: Match Point
Series: Sports of the Seasons #1

Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
Release Date: July 20, 2016
Genre: M/M Sports Romance

Two stubborn men.

One is a rude jerk. The other, the life of the party.

It was hate at first sight.

Pro beach volleyball players Finn Callahan and Dexter Savage have been rivals since college. While Finn always comes out on top on the court, Dexter’s carefree and fun-loving personality earns him scores of adoring men and women. And as much as Finn fights to deny it, there’s another reason for the tension he feels when Dex is around. Hate wasn’t the only thing he felt when he first laid eyes on his opponent.

When they’re forced to team up, the two men must bury their differences—on and off the court—if either of them is going to succeed professionally.

Two firsts rolled into one. Leigh Carman is a new author for me and this is also my first beach volleyball story. I haven’t read many sports-themed stories, but this one was gripping. The sports scenes didn’t dominate the story and were written in an exciting way, often highlighting the tension between the two MCs.

Leigh’s engaging writing style kept me glued to the pages from beginning to end. It made a refreshing change to read a present tense narrative, and yes, some scenes jump ahead in time, but I liked that.  I also thought the alternate POVs gave us insight into the thoughts, backgrounds, and motivations of Finn and Dex, which help make us aware of their situations and feelings. I liked both of these great characters and their enemies-to-lovers romance. Their hatred stemmed from being rivals at college and on the pro-circuit, and we gradually get to find out the reasons why as the story unfolds.

I felt like I was actually watching a volleyball game at times with all the going back and forth of emotions and changes of heart between these two. And yet, their love-hate relationship oozed sexual chemistry from the start and this all added to the UST. And when you think they’re finally getting somewhere at last. Gah! How you want them to bash their heads together and tell them to just get together and sort things out once and for all. They both come across as hot headed drama queens who have a tendency to storm off when they get angry or jealous rather than talking through their problems. There are plenty of intense scenes between them and when they finally get down to making out, it’s super hot!  Once they are together, they are perfect for each other. I loved their dialogue throughout, even when they were at each other’s throats. It came across as real and vivid.

I must say that whenever Finn’s ex was mentioned I was in tears.  Tris was a lovely guy and they were great together. My heart went out to Finn, especially as he had to keep his feelings to himself and couldn’t share his grief with anyone, not even his family. I liked that Finn’s attraction to Dex developed slowly as he came to terms with his loss of Tris. The transition didn’t feel morbid or unfaithful to the memory of his ex and the scene at the graveside had me weeping. So moving.

For me, I didn’t find Dex’s reasons for not realizing he was gay, and then for not coming out to be entirely plausible, and the continued animosity between the guys seemed a little far-fetched at times. Yet despite these few issues, I adored this story, the writing, and the passion-filled characters. If a book grips me like this one did, I overlook minor points and still award it 5*.

Overall, a wonderful enemies-to-lovers story involving two men who wished to remain in the closet at the start, but eventually bring out the best in each other. Highly recommended.

Leigh Carman is the M/M writing alter-ego of Heather C. Leigh.

Heather C. Leigh is the author of the Amazon best selling Famous series. She likes to write about the ‘dark’ side of fame. The part that the public doesn’t get to see, how difficult it is to live in a fishbowl and how that affects relationships.

Heather was born and raised in New England and currently lives outside Atlanta, GA with her husband, 2 kids, and French Bulldog, Shelby.

She loves the Red Sox, the Patriots, and anything chocolate (but not white chocolate, everyone knows it’s not real chocolate so it doesn’t count) and has left explicit instructions in her will to have her ashes snuck into Fenway Park and sneakily sprinkled all over while her family enjoys beer, hot dogs, and a wicked good time.

RAINBOW SNIPPETS

This week’s Rainbow Snippet is taken from my taboo story

Let Your Heart Decide

Let Your Heart Decide

I shot my head back, scanning the darkness for the strange figure.

Nothing.

I remained frozen for several minutes, not daring to turn my back on whatever or whoever was out there. My blood thrummed through my body; the pulse of my racing heart beat loud in my ears.

Idiot. Go back inside. There’s no one there.

Bats flitted in the darkening sky. Clouds now covered the moon. A cool breeze stirred through the branches and ruffled my hair.

Still I waited.

See, nothing to be scared of out here.

Myles would have been impressed.

Fuck Myles.

Practice Makes Perfect (Housemates #3) – Jay Northcote – Release Blitz, Review Tour & Giveaway

Length: 54,000 words

Cover Artist: Garrett Leigh

Genre: Contemporary Gay Romance

Getting experience with the guy next door seems like a great idea—until the lines blur.

Dev, a geeky first year physics student, has zero sexual experience and he’s determined to change that ASAP. After a bad time in halls of residence, he’s starting the summer term with different housemates and a new plan of action.

Ewan lives in the house next door to Dev. He’s young, free and single, and isn’t looking to change that anytime soon. When awkward circumstances throw them together, Ewan offers to help Dev out in the bedroom in return for maths tutoring, and Dev jumps at the chance.

They work their way through Dev’s sex-to- do list, but what starts as a perfect no- strings arrangement gets more complicated as their feelings for each other begin to grow. If they’re going to turn their lessons in lovemaking into something more permanent, they need to work out how they feel about each other—before they get to the end of Dev’s list.

NB: Although this book is part of a series, it is a complete story with different main characters and can be read as a standalone.

cropped-Rainbow-Header copy 6
Sitting on his bed, Dev yawned, his full stomach making him sleepy. He stared at his phone as he contemplated calling home but decided he couldn’t face it tonight. He loved his mum, but she did tend to bang on. Once she got him on the line, she’d end up talking for ages and asking him a million questions he was too tired to answer. Instead, he sent his mum a quick text.

All moved in, everything’s good. I’m shattered now so I’m going to have an early night. I’ll call you tomorrow.

She replied within seconds as though she’d been waiting for him to call.

Okay sweetie, glad you’re settled. Sleep well xxx

He picked up his notepad and crossed off phone home. Texting counted. He also crossed off everything else on his list for today.

That was Saturday done. Dev set his notepad aside, opened his laptop, and pulled up his lists app. He liked his notepad for day-to- day organisation; it gave him a certain satisfaction to cross out the things he’d done and to get to the end of the day with all the tasks completed. But for longer-term planning, he kept his lists on his Mac, synced to his phone.

For the first time in six months, Dev could breathe again. Finally he had a safe place where he could get back on track and look to the future. He began to type.

Things To Do This Term

Make some friends

Learn to cook

Research sex stuff

Join Grindr

Get some experience

Find a boyfriend

He stared at the words on the screen and sighed. That seemed like a lot of things to aim for. But it was good to have goals, right? Jez and Mac seemed really nice, so hopefully Dev was already on his way to achieving the first objective. And that bloke Ewan… Dev’s mind conjured up the image of the flame-haired hunk who lived next door. Ewan had been friendly.

Maybe there was potential there too.

Housemates

cropped-Rainbow-Header copy 3
 4.5*

This is the third book in the Housemates series. Each story focuses on a couple who are brought together through a ‘friends with benefits’ type arrangement. In this case, Ewan teaches Dev ‘how to do’ the various sexual acts on his ‘to-do’ list.

Dev is different from most characters I’ve read. For an eighteen year old, he is extremely mature, as are all the Housemates characters—think teenage bodies with men’s heads.  Dev has set ways of doing things and is well organised. He is very logical, down to writing lists of things he has to do. He is a socially awkward and rather geeky guy, susceptible to bullying, and struggling to find his way during his first year at uni. All these things make him adorable.

Ewan is the gorgeous ginger hunk of a neighbour who volunteers to help Dev gain experience with sex in exchange for some Maths tutoring.

Of course, they soon fall for each other and give the impression they are only going through the motions so Dev is ready for his first boyfriend—which Ewan is at pains to point out he doesn’t want when they first meet.

And herein lies the problem. Neither has the nerve to admit their arrangement has led to feelings developing for the other, nor do they have the confidence to ask the other out on a date. One partially overheard conversation almost leads to the end of their budding friendship. I particularly enjoyed the angsty scenes that followed this miscommunication, though. I just love all those tingles. And no worries, it’s all resolved pretty swiftly.

There are plenty of cute moments between the two guys along the way. Plus their inhibitions seem to disappear during their very steamy and hot sex scenes together. We are treated to recipe tips too as Ewan teaches Dev how to cook. They make a captivating couple, although I would have liked more dialogue to show them getting to know each other and what they liked about the other person rather than focusing mainly on the actions of what they do.

I liked that we get glimpses of  the previous happy couples—Jez and Mac and Josh and Rupert—and see they are still very much in love as well as contributing to this storyline.

Overall, another enjoyable sexy and very British story from Jay.

Jay lives just outside Bristol in the West of England, with her husband, two children, and two cats.

She comes from a family of writers, but she always used to believe that the gene for fiction writing had passed her by. She spent years only ever writing emails, articles, or website content. One day, she decided to try and write a short story–just to see if she could–and found it rather addictive. She hasn’t stopped writing since.

Ed tippytoed awkwardly down the red steps. He was excited but confused. He came to the changing rooms and the lockers and was overawed by the energy he felt and saw. All these men, half naked putting on socks, taking off towels, pulling off shirts – like it was the most natural thing in the world.

It only made him aware of how self-conscious he’d always been, especially around his body and nakedness. Here were all these fully grown men, some older, some more nubile – just changing. Being men. It was like in that moment his mind, his barriers, his awkwardness were all coming down, he felt suddenly so liberated and excited that he could be proud of his body here. He could be naked without weird looks or judgment. He could be admired for his body. It all felt so dirty and wrong and exciting.

He eagerly took his clothes off, but didn’t look around much. That must have been a habit from the PE changing rooms at school. Get dressed quickly. Don’t look around. Don’t get accused of being gay. Take a sneaky glance here or there but don’t do anything that will make them think you fancy them. He exhaled loudly. He was almost shivering at the anticipation and excitement he was feeling. It was like a new fantasy world that he was discovering, well beyond his imagination.”

Alexander Clifford is a young British author. He is very perceptive and curious and has always been fascinated by practical psychology and what makes people tick. His biggest influences are Stefan Zweig and Colin Wilson – whose writing asks the big questions. Who am I? How can I fit into the world despite being an outsider? What is it like to really be human? His curiosity led him to working various jobs in marketing, as a copywriter, journalist, salesperson, estate agent and masseur. He’s also traveled the world to the Caribbean, America and many European countries. All of this observation and curiosity has given Alexander a wealth of material to write books that he hopes resonates with you.

Yes, there.

Not a tree or a bush.

A man. Definitely the build and outline of a man.

A tramp, perhaps.

Neither of us moved or made a sound.

I blinked again. The woods smelled earthy, dank, and airless.

I caught a flicker of light out of the corner of my eye and turned my head.

HOME ON THE RANGE

Pinkerton Agent Stiles Long is sent to the Circle W Ranch to uncover who is killing the ranch’s cattle. In order to discover the truth about the goings on at the ranch, Stiles has to prove to the ranchers he’s more than a good-looking city slicker.

Savage Beare, the head ranch foreman, is far from happy that Stiles is there to check things out. He has secrets of his own.

Stiles finds Savage incredibly good-looking, but cold and aloof.

He’s also a suspect. One of many.

When Stiles’ best friend and partner, Lizzie Ferguson, is kidnapped things begin to shake apart.

Stiles doesn’t trust anyone and he needs to find Lizzie before it’s too late.

A BELL CLANGED loudly from somewhere on the property. Stiles was sure it was calling the ranch hands in for their evening meal. He took a look at himself in the mirror and straightened his tie. There was no need to wear his hat, so he left it behind in his room. He brushed his fingers through his hair one last time and felt his appearance was quite fitting.

He followed the sound of men’s voices, laughing and joking amongst each other. Walking through the arch that lead into the largest kitchen Stiles had seen since he’d left his home in England, he realized he was overdressed. Most of the ranch hands were in clean shirts and the same blue waist overalls that Savage Beare had been wearing earlier in the day. The thought of Savage Beare’s naked body caused Stiles’ cheeks to flush. The room went silent as every man looked in Stiles’ direction. Even Lizzie stared and shook her head in dismay.

Gus Williams started laughing and eventually the rest joined in with him. Stiles wasn’t going to give them the satisfaction of seeing him embarrassed or upset. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the gray pinstriped suit he was wearing, or the white shirt and black tie. He was about to speak up when he felt another body come close to his.

The men stopped laughing and started digging into the plates of food set in front of them. Seeing everyone else in the room, Stiles realized one person was missing—Savage Beare. Assaulted by the scents of leather and musk, Stiles knew who stood behind him. His cock jerked slightly and he cleared his throat before he looked over his shoulder.

CJ BATY lives in southwest Ohio with her very patient husband and two encouraging children. Her heart however, lives in the mountains of Tennessee where she hopes to retire some day. The mountains have always provided her with inspiration and a soothing balm to the stresses of everyday life.

The dream of writing her own stories started in high school but was left on the back burner of life until her son introduced her to Fan Fiction and encouraged her to give it a try. She found that her passion for telling a story was still there and writing them down to share with others was much more thrilling than she had ever expected.

One thing she has learned from life and she is often heard to say is, “You are never too old to follow your dream!”

Let Your Heart Decide

Something swooped towards me. I instinctively ducked, a shriek escaped my throat, and my glasses slipped down my nose.

An owl screeched and flapped its wings above my head.

I stood, straightening my glasses with a shaky hand. My heart pounded as I waited, not daring to move.

I peered into the more distant shadows again. Was that someone standing there staring at me? I blinked. Was I imagining the whites of someone’s eyes?

Only one thing can keep Ashton safe from the supernatural predators who made the world into their depraved, twisted playground after the Takeover—but it’s the one thing that would steal the last remnants of his freedom. At every turn, society confronts Reese and Ashton with the way humans are treated as mere playthings to be used and discarded. When they realize their own desires and pride have no place in the status quo, Ashton and his werewolf lover understand they’ll have to engage in the deadly games played by those in charge if they want to make a difference.
But Reese isn’t a diplomat, and Ash is only human. Together, they must decide if they’re willing to work with the devil they know in what might change everything or rely on their consciences in a world that has no place for kindness or honor… and if they’re ready to sacrifice everything along the way.

“You should smile more, ‘lias,” Desideria remarked. “You’re happy, aren’t you?” And with those mocking words, she was gone as though she’d never been there at all, leaving only the lingering traces of death to mark her passing.

Julian shrugged as he rose. “She’s in a mood,” he said mildly.

“Isn’t she always?”

Julian laughed, and Elias wanted badly to kiss the lips that parted in mirth. But as ever, he knew he would taste the vampire’s blood instead of Julian—and he knew better than to risk what they had. “If you only knew, brother. If you only knew.”

Elias shook his head. “You’re welcome to her.”

Julian’s laughter rang in his ears as his stepbrother departed, and Elias sank down into his chair. Even had they shared blood, if his brother had kept to the old ways—if they had lived as siblings of the royal families of old, of the witching families of old—they could have ruled the world together. As it was, between the full weight of the Ivers name and the powers the vampiress could wield, they held influence that staggered those who attempted to defy them.

But no. He had lost Julian, just as he had lost—

“Mr. Ivers?” Spencer asked tentatively from the doorway, where Julian had left it open. “I have a Mr. Dorsey here to see you.”

Elias took in a deep breath, forcing himself to calm. “Show him in.”

“He’s brought a human pet, Mr. Ivers,” Spencer reported. “Do you want him in here or in the kennels?”

Elias considered a moment. “Is he marked?” Spencer nodded, and Elias smiled. “The kennels would be perfect. Take Jace there as well.” He glanced between them, his smile turning sharp as he looked between the former lovers. “Separate kennels. My puppy here doesn’t have the best manners.”

INTERVIEW WITH R. PHOENIX

What is your favorite book and why?

Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson. The man is a fucking genius. World-building, characterization, plot… It’s all just gorgeous. I can’t gush enough about it.

What is the #1 most played song on your music list?

Even though Lacuna Coil and Icon for Hire are my favorite bands, somehow this is Radioactive with Lindsey Stirling and Pentatonix.

What is your favorite or most inspiring quote?

Oh, man. I love quotes. Quotes are my thing. I’ll be writing about one in another blog, actually, and another later in this interview. So I’m going to have to choose these two:

“The purpose of a storyteller is not to tell you how to think, but to give you questions to think upon.”

― Brandon Sanderson, The Way of Kings

“He saw it in her eyes. The anguish, the frustration. The terrible nothing that clawed inside and sought to smother her. She knew. It was there, inside. She had been broken.

Then she smiled. Oh, storms. She smiled anyway.

It was the single most beautiful thing he’d seen in his entire life.”
― Brandon SandersonWords of Radiance

What chore do you absolutely hate to do?

Cleaning out the duck pools. Oh god, I hate it. It’s hot and annoying and it takes forever because I’m a weakling.

Do you have a favorite time of day/day of week/month of year and if so, why?

Any time I can get quiet, whether it’s late at night or early in the morning. I’ll flip-flop between them depending on when the family’s most likely to leave me alone.

What sound do you love to hear or make?

Cats purring. Just sets me at ease unless there are also little tiny claws digging into my flesh while said cat purrs.

What is your favorite movie?

Dogma. I don’t watch many movies or much television, though.

How do you relax?

I’m sort of a workaholic, so I don’t do much of this. When I’m awake, I’m doing something. But I still do some role playing via Google Docs and so on. I love telling stories with other people and being a part of a world we create together. I also like chatting with people online. Not so much in the real world.

What is your favorite drink?

Coffee brewed straight into hot chocolate topped off with Bailey’s Chocolate Cherry.

What would people be most surprised to know about you?

People are always surprised to find that I have a mini farm filled with the cute and cuddly. I have Muscovy ducks and Silver Fox rabbits and cats and just… things! Oh, and that we eat them.

Can you give the readers a brief summary of your latest book? What led you to write this book?

In the wake of tragedy, two lovers must decide what they’re willing to do and how far they’re willing to go to see the world around them changed—or if they’re able to do anything at all. There are a few darker moments than what’s come before in the series with what I think is a surprising twist thrown in for good measure.

Temper continues my Ripples in the Status Quo series. The first three can be read as standalones, but in books four (Owned) and five (Temper), things really start to come together.

What genre does it fall in?

Temper is Dark Erotica. At its core, it is a love story, but there are no fluffy bunnies or clear skies for these characters. Their path is a difficult one. There’s sex, there’s violence, and there’s a bit of everything in between, I think. As I’ve said, I love quotes, and here’s another one. Tiffany Reisz wrote in The Siren that Erotica is a subgenre of Horror–because “Romance is sex plus love. Erotica is sex plus fear.”

Do you want to share any funny moments or experiences while writing this book, did your characters play well with you?  Did you play well together?

My characters are assholes.

Give us a little insight into your main characters. Who are they?

Reese and Ashton return from Ravel, the second book in my series, and the story centers primarily around them. Reese is a werewolf who, up until recently, was a bit of a recluse after his lover died. When Ashton, a human, broke into his house to try to steal from him, he sort of started to wake up and see what the world is really like.

There are really mixed opinions on both of them. I’ve had a friend call Reese my Christian Grey, and I’ve had others say he’s sweet and romantic. The fact of the matter is that he’s an entitled rich werewolf in a world where that means he’s pretty much a god, and he doesn’t quite understand what it means to be less than that. Ashton, on the other hand, is a snarky little asshole, and he has a special place in my heart. He wants his freedom so badly, and he knows that it’s not going to happen.

Will we be seeing these characters again any time soon? Is this book part of a series?

These characters will be returning in Fracture, which is the sixth book in the Ripples in the Status Quo series!

Which actor would you like to see playing the lead character from your most recent book?

Alexander Skarsgård. He would be perfect for Reese.

Tell us about some of the other books you have written.

So the Ripples in the Status Quo Books were meant to be a set of standalones that might occasionally cross, but they were never really meant to be a series. Somewhere between Bought and Recoil, though, that changed. Temper is the fifth book in this series. I’m really not that great at brevity, but let’s see if I can summarize:

Series: Supernaturals take over the world. Yay for supes, bad for subjugated humans.

Bought: Werewolf takes the fall for his lover. Bought by an evil witch who wants to break him.

Ravel: Thief gets caught breaking into werewolf’s house (oops) trying to find things to steal to save his BFF.

Recoil: Vampire whore tries to break a human slave from the Rebellion.

Owned: Everything has a consequence. Everything. Continuation of Recoil. Brings back Bought characters.

What scene in your writing has made you laugh the hardest or cry the most?

The final scene in Recoil made me cry my eyes out (spoilers!). An unpublished short with Reese and Ashton made me laugh the hardest.

Did you always know you wanted to be a writer? Have you held any interesting jobs while you worked on your books?

I’ve wanted to be a writer since I first learned people did this for a living. I had this teacher in 5th grade who would either be proud or appalled at what I’m doing now, and she encouraged me to do more of it. I learned how to write out my demons, and I’ve been doing it since.

Unfortunately, I let people tell me that I’d never succeed, and I let myself languish at jobs I hated. I worked at a bank for almost 10 years! Not really that interesting, but hey. I’m also in school for Cybersecurity, which is what I’m doing while I do…everything else.

What are your ambitions for your writing career and what’s your favorite part of writing?

My ambitions are pretty modest: I just want to keep writing because I love it. My favorite part is getting to explore my own world and get lost in it; I get to play deity for a little while and control everything that’s going on. And then beyond that, I’ve met some amazing people who I never would have met otherwise.

Do you write full or part-time?  If part time would you like to share your J.O.B. with your readers?

I work 24/7. I’m a full time student doing 8 week condensed courses, I’m a housewife and mother, I write, I copy edit for another author, I take care of the mini-farm, I cook, I sometimes clean, I take care of the garden… When it’s close to deadline, fulltime. The rest of the time, I steal moments.

What is the hardest part about writing for you?

Finding time? That and getting started. I write by getting an idea into my head—whether it’s from a word, a phrase, a song, a character—and then I just write. Once I get started, I’m fine, but the whole “getting started” part is where things get a little murky.

What would you say is your most interesting writing quirk?

I write out of order. I start by getting a vague idea of what I want to do with a book, and then I start writing scenes. About halfway through, I realize I have no direction, panic, write an outline, write around the outline, then go back and put the pieces back together. Editing is fuuuuuuun.

Writing in the field that you do, how would you explain to someone the difference between erotic fiction, erotic(a) and maybe even porn?

In my opinion, erotic fiction is fiction where the sex scenes could come out and the story would be mostly unchanged. They add to the story, but they don’t diminish it if they’re gone. In erotica, the sex is integral to the plot. In porn… Come on, there’s no plot in porn except people getting laid. (Haha, ‘come on.’)

Does your own sexuality come into play when writing your books (i.e. do any of your real life scenarios make it to the page)?

Alas. Since I’m not a gay man, I don’t get to experience these things.

How do you go about writing a good sex scene?

I’m totally good at writing one-handed. Oh. You want a real answer? The characters decide how they want to do it, and I write it.

If you are self-published why have you chosen to take this route over going with a publishing house?

This should come as no shock to anyone who knows me, but I’m a teensy bit of a control freak. I like getting to write what I want when I want; I like setting my own deadlines, picking my own cover artist and growing with her, doing my own editing or getting my own little team to help me out… And I like being able to experiment with pricing and strategies and so on.

…There’s also the fact that most publishing houses won’t take what I write.

In your opinion do you feel a book blurb or the cover art is more important in generating interest in a book and why?

The cover art is the first thing someone sees, but the blurb is what makes them decide whether or not to buy the book. So I have to say the cover art first, because it needs to catch a potential reader’s attention. I know mine tend towards the “simpler” side, but that’s exactly why I love them. 🙂

Who would you say is your biggest supporter?

I can’t name just one person, which is amazing to be able to say. But I’m fortunate enough to have had three people who got me through writing Temper: Brandyjo, Patricia Kristine, and Sharon. I was terrified of writing this book, because I went to places that I’ve never really been before. These three dealt with, uh, quite a bit. You should probably pity them, really.

How do you feel about social media and its impact on the world of literature?

I love connecting with people who are reading my books; I love talking to people online, because I’m very introverted and quiet “in real life.” At the same time, though, it’s draining. There’s also the dependence on Facebook, which frightens me for so many reasons.

What is the one thing you wish individuals would consider when writing a review?

They really don’t have to be anything special or long and drawn out! The fact that you took the time out of your day to write a review still means the world to me and most of the authors I know.

Are there any causes within the LGBTQ community that are a hot button for you or that you are passionate about?

I want to write a story with a bisexual character, which might include M/F scenes. I’m wary of doing it, because I’ve heard readers say they refuse to read books with M/F pairings. It makes me sad, because I would love to see more bi characters in stories. I don’t talk about it much, because I’m actually extremely private about my personal life, but it hits pretty close to home.

Are there certain authors who inspire your writing?

Brandon Sanderson, above all, inspires me—to write faster, to write better, to build better worlds and characters. He writes epic fantasy with a deft hand, and his stories and plots are spectacular. Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files taught me a lot about writing urban fantasy—which I don’t really write, but it’s still something I keep in mind when world-building. His villains are also multi-dimensional and fascinating, and in general, his characters evolve beautifully. Tiffany Reisz taught me it’s okay to write erotica and that there can still be a story; she’s also the first author I read who wrote male/male, I think! And Nicholas Bella’s books teach me that it’s okay to push limits, which is one of the hardest things to do.

What sort of book do you enjoy reading in your free time? What was the last book you read? What did you enjoy about it?

Free time? What is this free time you speak of? I love anything with strong, flawed characters. The last book I read was Paper Kisses by R.M. Grace. I loved her prose. She writes like poetry, and it was just a gorgeous piece of writing. (I’m still pissed, lady.)

In this ever changing market, do you prefer e-books or paper books and why?

I really prefer paper books (as evidenced by the five billion I have), but at the same time, I like being able to carry said five billion with me.

What other projects are you currently working on that you would like to divulge to us?

I have a few small things I’m working on—a Reese and Ash short story that’s actually humorous, a story with two new characters from the world (Khaz’s “uncle,” so to speak, and his pet human), and I have this idea for a contemporary book that I might one day work on. Most of my attention is focused on the main RISQ books, though.

Is there anything else you would like to share with us – an exclusive perhaps?

Here’s the start of my contemporary book:

He was the most beautiful man I had ever seen–and I nearly destroyed him. He entrusted me with a heart that had broken so many times that hairline cracks marred its every surface. Instead of locking it away and tending lovingly to it, I held it too tight and squeezed until there was very nearly nothing left.

Until he was gone.

Now, I can make amends.

This time, he’ll stay mine.

Many thanks for sharing all this with us and congratulations on your new release.

R. Phoenix has an unhealthy fascination with contrasts: light and dark, heroes and villains, order and chaos. She believes that love can corrupt and power can redeem. Her muse is a sadomasochistic slave driver who thinks it’s terribly amusing to give her the best ideas when she just got comfortable and warm in bed, and she passes on that torture to her readers.

If she had it her way, she would describe the books in her “Ripples in the Status Quo” world as: “Supernatural creatures take over the world and turn humans into pets and food. There’s some sex between guys. And… um… effed up things happen.” It’s probably a good thing she has people around her to remind her that she actually wants people to read her books. (They should really be more diligent, especially when they know she’s writing her author bio.)

She’s an author, stay-at-home mother, housewife, second time college student, and duck herder extraordinaire. She’s learning how to cook without burning the house down, her garden is somehow neither drowning nor drying up, and one day she might remember what that mythical thing called “free time” is. She’s starting to wonder who thought it was a good idea to write bios in third person.

She also tries entirely too hard to be funny, and she mercilessly inflicts her terrible sense of humor upon anyone who speaks to her. Really, it’s not you. It’s her. All the same, she’d love it if you’d say hello, because it makes her day to hear that someone read something she wrote. If they enjoyed it, there’s usually an awkward happy dance and embarrassing sounds of joy to accompany it (no, not that kind of sound, you perv).
