My Top Reads and Audiobooks ~ April – June

Back in December I signed up to the Goodreads Challenge.

Not having done this before and not knowing how many books I’d read in a year, I entered a nice round number of one hundred. I intended to include the ebooks I’d read as well as the audiobooks I listened to. I thought an average of two a week would be achievable. To my surprise and delight, I achieved the challenge and I’ve now increased my total to one hundred and fifty books.

In no particular order, here are my recommended books from the last three months

eBooks

I’d love to hear about some of your favourite stories.

Rainbow Snippets ~ June 25th

RAINBOW SNIPPETS

This week’s Rainbow Snippet is taken from my taboo story

Let Your Heart Decide

Let Your Heart Decide

Reaching the wall, I placed my hands on the damp stone and gripped it hard. I drew in a calming breath, prepared to leap back, frightened that something or someone would jump up and scare the life out of me. I peered into the gloom, giving my sight the chance to adjust to the darkness. Tree trunks and branches, undergrowth and smaller bushes came into view—nothing untoward.

I removed my suddenly cold hands from the wall.

A soft rustling drew my attention downward. A mouse or rabbit, I hoped, although I tensed again anyway. That eerie, uneasy feeling persisted.

Thank you for reading!

From HELL BOUND
Asta Idonea

Asmodeus glanced up when he heard the approaching footfall. That familiar tread, first assured then hesitant, brought a gleeful smile to his lips. But he schooled his features into an expression of nonchalance before the faint knock sounded.

“Come.” He allowed himself a moment to appreciate his imperious tone; then he refocused his attention on the leather-bound volume in his hands.

Taharial slipped into the room, accompanied by a blast of Hell-Fire heat from outside. Asmodeus could feel the weight of his gaze, but he chose to let him stew for a moment. He’d discovered a little heightened tension at the start of their interview never failed to add to the enjoyment later on.

“Asmodeus.”

Asmodeus kept his back turned, although the sound of his name, spoken in that small, beseeching voice, gave him goosebumps. “Here again so soon, Taharial? What would your dear brothers say?” He tutted and twisted in his seat.

Taharial looked delectable as he stared at the floor and wrung his hands. The sight of him with shoulders, head, and wings all drooped was one with which Asmodeus was by now well acquainted, yet it ignited a fire within him every time.

“Please, Asmodeus.” Taharial looked up and met his eyes. “I-I need it.”

Asmodeus slipped the feather into the book to mark his place. Then he set the volume aside, stretched his legs, and rose.

An enjoyable collection of stories of various lengths, all loosely themed under the banner of BDSM.

There’s a few collars and cuffs involved, but there’s also some wax play, the use of restraints and blindfolds, D/s type relationships, subspace, and safewords scattered among these well-written stories.

FORGED IN STEEL by Layla Dorine 4*

The last thing Flint expected upon discovering a homeless young man rummaging through the dumpster behind his shop was a kindred spirit.

The last thing Trace expected to find in that dumpster was a home.

This story is about the building of trust between two men and the development of a relationship where one is commanded to do things by the other.

PLAYING IT SAFE by Aimee Brissay 4.5*

To safe or not to safe?

That is the question.

This would have been my favourite story in the anthology if it hadn’t ended so abruptly and left open-ended. Most of the story focuses on the interaction between a Dom and the sub of his friend as they play out a scene without the use of a safeword. I felt as if I was in the room with them.

ROOM TO PLAY by Lily Velden 4*

Jack wanted to dabble in some light BDSM, looking for a little role play. A little role-reversal.

Rhys took to their games like a duck to water.

A sizzling recount of a couple’s venture into bondage and domination as they decide whether to commit to a twenty-four seven  D/s relationship or not.

A TOUCH OF KINK by Alina Popescu 4*

A moody and angry Tudor follows his friend, Radu, to the airport to pick up a client.

Despite Radu’s efforts, he’s still sulking over his boyfriend, Kahoni, not being able to fly over for his birthday.

But the airport only opens up the door to a stream of steamy surprises for Tudor. Will his mood improve?

A sweet birthday surprise story involving bondage kink. Great characters in this one.

LET’S DANCE IN SIN by Kassandra Lea 3.5*

Samuel wants to play with his favorite toy and Flynn is only too willing to oblige.

But first, he has a little treat for his delectable angel.

Heavenly pleasures for these angels who meet for a romp.

NEW LOVE, NEW SIGHT by Carol Pedroso 3.5*

Exiled and lonely, Sorl longs for home.

Kidnapped, blind, and scared, Unjarf seeks help of any kind.

When they meet can love bring rescue, hope, and most importantly new sight?

An enjoyable story set in a BDSM club in an alternate universe.

SWITCH by Eddy LeFey 4.5*

Robert is floundering, trying to get his life back together.

Daniel offers to help, to teach Robert what it means to truly let go of control, in order to be able to seize it again.

Life truly is a…. Switch.

I enjoyed the slow build of this story as Robert’s new relationship develops with Daniel and we gradually discover what happened in Robert’s horrendous past. The climax of the story was exciting, but I would have loved to have read at least one D/s based scene between Robert and Daniel.

HELL BOUND by Asta Idonea  4.5*

When Taharial, angel of purity, descends to Hell to reprimand him, lust demon Asmodeus cannot resist having a little fun with his unwanted guest.

However, when he chains Taharial to his bed, events take a turn he didn’t expect.

Great story and excellent writing. Again, this story has more of a faux bondage theme, but I loved the idea of an angel and a demon making out in Hell. I could certainly picture the beautiful tableau of a winged angel riding a demon on his bed. And Asmodeus was such a nice hot demon too!

From Picked Fresh

Jude shifted in his seat and stared at Hudson. Hudson couldn’t take his eyes off the road, but the desire to turn toward Jude and mirror him was overwhelming. “What was your first impression of me when I met you at the farmers market?”

“Should I be diplomatic or honest?”

“Honest.”

Hudson ran that day over in his mind. It was crystal clear, still, even though it had been more than nine months ago. Jude had meandered from stand to stand. He initially stood out from the crowd because of what he was wearing: a bright blue, almost turquoise wool coat over a black turtleneck and tight black jeans. In the blur of quilted plaid flannel and fleece hoodies in various shades of drab, olive, and Carhartt, Jude was all Hudson could see.

“I couldn’t keep my eyes off you. You were… stunning.” He shook his head. “I don’t know another word for it. I was talking to some customer about how we raised our chickens, and when I saw you, I stopped midsentence. I stared, felt like a dirty old man because you looked so young, and when I turned back to the woman to carry on our conversation, I had no idea what we’d been talking about. Literally none. It was like looking at you sucked the words out of my throat and the thoughts right out of my head.”

Jude chuckled. “Seriously? Was it the coat?”

“It made you stand out, but no, it wasn’t the coat. It was everything about you. Your broad shoulders and your hair and your eyes and your fucking lips.”

“You like my lips?” Jude pulled his rose-flavored lip stuff out of his front pocket and made a show of smearing it across the bottom one. Then he rubbed his lips together and licked them, all while staring at Hudson with soft bedroom eyes.

The bus vibrated, a jagged noise piercing Hudson’s ears as he drove too far to the right, edging his tires onto the rumble strip. “¡Coño!” He maneuvered back into the center of his lane.

Jude laughed. Hudson’s heart thundered against his rib cage.

“You’re evil,” Hudson said. “Evil, I tell you!”

“Maybe.” Jude bit at his bottom lip.

“Stop. Stop tempting me with your fucking gorgeous mouth. I can’t have you doing that shit while I’m driving.”

“Okay.” Jude smirked but kept his tongue and teeth from doing anything else. He put away those hazel sex-eyes too. “So, how did you see this trip going down?”

“Just like that?” Hudson was incredulous.

“What?”

“You can just turn it on and off like a switch?”

“With you, sure.”

“Well, I can’t.” Hudson gestured to his crotch, where his dick was obvious, thick, and quickly moving on its way to fully hard, even though Jude had stopped the licking and the biting.

“Want me to touch you?” Jude’s voice was breathy as he slid his warm palm up Hudson’s inner thigh. He thumbed over the head of Hudson’s cock, and Hudson got harder. Jude played with just the head, moving back and forth, his touch light and delicious.

“Want me to drive off the road?” Hudson managed not to sound choked off.

“No.” Jude pulled his hand away and smiled like the devil. “I want you to drive. And I want you to tell me about what you want to do on this trip besides the obvious. And for the record, turning it off doesn’t happen like a switch. Turning me on with one look, easy!”

“You’re dangerous.”

“Damn right I am.”

Picked Fresh Bus

cropped-Rainbow-Header copy 3

Picked Fresh follows straight on from Farm Fresh. Hudson and Jude go on a road trip in a fabulous VW Microbus. They deal with the past demons that plagued them in Book 1 as they tackle family issues and the parents who treated them badly, but at least they have each other for support as they seek closure. The guys have plenty of alone time too as they travel on this long journey across many states, getting to know each other better, even though they still struggle to express their true feelings. Jude also has a chance to explore his sexuality further, leaving Hudson to worry whether he’ll be enough for Jude in the future.

We still get a glimpse of what’s happening at Kaleidoscope Gardens while the Hudson and Jude are on their road trip. After deciding to become an exclusive couple within the commune, Leo is feeling off kilter and is definitely missing the guys while they are away, especially Hudson who he’s known and loved for many years. He’s also tired and feeling his age as he ponders his future and the commune as a whole.

I enjoyed this story and Posy’s fluent and emotion-packed writing. I loved reading more about Jude and Hudson’s intense relationship and how they offered each other such unconditional support. Their intimate scenes are beautifully expressed and reflect the deep feelings they now share. There’s plenty of character growth as the story unfolds and we find out more about their respective pasts.

Let Your Heart Decide

I had the distinct impression I was being watched. A shiver rippled along my arms and the hairs prickled from my skin as a chill swept over me.

Man up, Rhys. There’s no one out there.

And just to prove to myself—and my ex—that I could man up, I’d pull up my big-boy pants and check it out all on my own.

Goddammit, why am I even thinking about Myles tonight?

I’d successfully shut him out of my mind for most of the day and all of the past few weeks.

Thank you for reading!

Starting over at forty is hard work for landscape architect Jack Bowman. His long-term partner hurt him badly. With his self-esteem dented by the break up, trusting a new lover is going to take time.

Tyler Freeman is equally unlucky when it comes to love. Now that he’s over thirty-five, he’s tired of getting played. All he wants is someone special. How hard can it be to meet a man who’s honest, with no hidden surprises?

Being set up on a blind date might be a classic cliché, but it’s a stroke of good luck for Jack and Tyler. They have a lot in common, including previous relationships steeped in deceit, but it’s worth navigating their trust issues if it means laying those ghosts to rest.

Making it work finally seems possible—until an accidental discovery threatens their newfound happiness.

cropped-Rainbow-Header copy 6

Everyone said their goodbyes, and Jack tried not to notice the blatant, knowing looks being passed around. He had no doubt he’d be getting some nosy texts later. On the plus side, at least he wouldn’t be the only one.

Now it was only the two of them, they wandered into the bar area and snagged a small table by the fireplace. It wasn’t lit—the late-April weather had been far too mild to warrant an open fire. The Saturday-night crowd from earlier had clearly moved on to somewhere else, and the room had quietened considerably.

“Thanks for offering me a lift.” Tyler smiled and took a sip of his drink. “I wasn’t ready to leave yet.”

“Me neither.” Jack had bought another Coke, and he ran his finger down through the condensation on the outside of the glass. “I have to admit I was a bit—a lot sceptical about whether or not this was a good idea.”

Tyler glanced up and met his gaze. “Meeting me?”

Jack’s smile was wry. “I was talking about the whole blind date thing, but yeah… I guess it was meeting you in general.” He cringed as he said it, perhaps not the best thing to say to someone whom you were hoping to go out with again. And despite Jack’s misgivings and preconceptions, he liked Tyler.

Tyler cocked his head to one side and frowned, as though he wasn’t sure how to feel about that. Jack had probably offended him, because no one liked to hear that sort of thing. But then, he’d offered to drive Tyler home so they could spend more time together—alone—so Tyler must realise Jack wanted to get to know him better. Or maybe not. If Jack had learned one thing from his breakup with Simon, it was that communication was key. Never assume someone knew what you meant or what you were thinking.

“I know that sounds bad, and it’s nothing personal. Christ, I’m pulling out all the clichés tonight, but it really was a case of it being me and not you.” Jack laughed and scrubbed a hand over his face. “Shit. Just when it was going so well. I’ve managed to fuck it up, haven’t I?”

cropped-Rainbow-Header copy 3

4*

I always enjoy Annabelle’s writing and her very English characters and settings. I had the pleasure of proofreading this story and loved it. It made a change to read about older men facing the challenge of dating again after being hurt by their previous partners and left in a vulnerable state. It’s a realistic and romantic tale of seeking a second chance at love and my heart went out to both guys.

Jack’s longtime partner had cheated on him and Tyler’s previous relationship ended in disaster. They are attracted to each other and get on well, but are wary of falling again and getting hurt. They lay their feelings and worries on the line quite boldly from the start. Although the idea of dating again is daunting, being mature men, they know what they want and go about getting it, albeit rather carefully. Both these insecure men want to be loved, but are cautious for much of the story because of their painful pasts are still very much in the present. They spend time on their conversations and speak with honesty. No miscommunication or major tantrums here. It’s all about slowly learning to trust someone else again. I adored how Annabelle expresses their thoughts and feelings and loved how fate worked its way into their lives.

This touching story is well paced and held my interest throughout. It’s about these two guys working things out between themselves, forging how they want their relationship to work, and learning to realize there is always another side to a story. They have supportive friends and families and these characters all added to my enjoyment of the  story. The short epilogue was sweet and finally gave the guys their HEA.

Can I just say I love the cover guy! *sighs*

Annabelle Jacobs lives in the South West of England with three rowdy children, and two cats. An avid reader of fantasy herself for many years, Annabelle now spends her days writing her own stories. They’re usually either fantasy or paranormal fiction, because she loves building worlds filled with magical creatures, and creating stories full of action and adventure.
