His Heart Held Hostage

Asta Idonea

“Another hour and we will reach the castle, Prince Darius,” the general said, his sneer morphing into a self-satisfied smile.

Darius hadn’t failed to notice the tone the general used when he spoke the word ‘prince’, as if he would deny Darius his title if he could, but Darius chose not to react. The general’s comment had been a statement, not a question, and it was no breach of etiquette not to respond.

The manacles weighed Darius’ arms down, the iron chafing his wrists. But pride kept him from complaining. That he was chained at all was a disgrace, an insult of the highest degree. He wasn’t supposed to be a prisoner of war but a political hostage, surety that his father would launch no future attack against the kingdom of Hrafnaheim. With the battle lost, Darius’ father, King Javor of Slunícková, had reluctantly relinquished his only son and heir in order to keep his kingdom, and Darius couldn’t blame him for that. Even so, Darius was sure his father had expected his son to be treated with greater care and respect than was currently being shown.

Either Darius’ mind had been more occupied than he’d realized or else he’d drifted off to sleep, because the next thing he knew the carriage was shuddering to a halt, and General Eiríksson grabbed hold of his arm and jerked him from his seat.

Martin is a guy’s guy, one who enjoys the simple things in life: baseball games with his son, family days, barbecues, and date nights with his lovely wife.

Once a year for two weeks, Martin takes his son, Marty, to Quillon’s Covert, a rustic family cabin secluded in the beautiful California mountains. Since before those long days of learning to play ball, Marty has loved his dad, but as Marty matures, Martin starts to see something else settle in his son’s uncertain gaze. What’s there lingers a little more than it should, and it seems far more appraising than it once was.

As Marty shows every sign of taking the lead, Martin is faced with the tough choices most parents never see: lose his son by being a father, or try to balance what’s best for their relationship by being something… more.

But with another trip to Quillon’s Covert on the horizon, has the point of no return already begun?

Note: This book contains incest.

Quillon’s Covert is a family-owned cabin set in the mountains, well away from the city and the rest of the civilised world. This tranquil place nestles among mature trees beside a lake, providing an idyllic retreat for the father and son’s annual male bonding trip. During this uninterrupted quality time they enjoy fishing, swimming, reading, listening to music, as well as cooking on the barbecue. Tradition has it they shed their clothing from the start, so neither man is embarrassed by their nakedness.
Marty is an only child and comes from a loving and supportive family. He enjoys a trusting relationship with his father, who is somewhat overprotective of his son because of an incident when Marty was a toddler. They have always been close, with plenty of affectionate contact. Marty is not a spoilt brat. He has been disciplined and taught to be respectful. As a result, he is developing into a mature and level-headed young man. He is confident enough to hug his father and tell him he loves him. Martin provides the calm and comfort his son needs. His special terms of endearment and cute nicknames are heart-warming and made me smile.

Each chapter provides a snapshot of their time at Quillon’s Covert and a glimpse into their changing connection as the years pass. We get to see both characters’ point of view and the closeness between the two men and their affection immediately becomes apparent. Throughout the story their overwhelming love shines through their actions and dialogue.

When Marty reaches puberty he starts to see Martin in a different light. He wants to be and look like his father. He crushes on his Dad’s hot body and his uncut cock. Marty is gay and Martin is straight. The men are candid about their thoughts and desires as their relationship moves to another level. They are both virgins with regard to gay sex and use their time at Quillon’s Covert to explore each other’s bodies and delve into their fantasies.

This beautiful story has an almost dreamlike quality, as if it is set in another world. What the two men did together at Quillon’s Covert didn’t extend to the real world or interfere with their other relationships when they returned home. Martin’s love for his wife was never seriously challenged. I assume she never discovered or suspected anything untoward between her husband and son. It’s almost as if these two weeks each year were a different life, set apart from reality. They provided something for each other they didn’t receive elsewhere. Both men experienced the best times of their lives here and admitted they loved each other more than anyone else. As much as they loved their other halves, nothing compared to the time they spent at Quillon’s Covert. But that’s where it stayed.

This devoted love is delightfully expressed from their first tentative touches to the hot and explicit sexual acts. Throughout the story the sex is consensual. Marty constantly receives reassurance about his father’s care and concern for him.

Quillon’s Covert was co-written by two talented male authors. Each presented one character’s point of view. Joseph portrayed Martin, while Louis wrote Marty’s sections of the story. Their writing styles are similar and complement each other perfectly, giving a slightly different voice to the two personalities.

Please heed the warnings tagged in this story and give it a wide berth if you are likely to be upset by any of them. It’s a taboo story involving biological father/son incest, age difference, cheating, explicit sex, kinks, spanking, and light bondage. Don’t be like the reviewer on Goodreads who gave the story 1* even before it was released. If it’s not for you, please move on.

If taboo is your thing or you’re open-minded, give it a read and enjoy. I can guarantee you will love this fabulous piece of writing and the heart-warming story.

**The authors provided me with a copy of this title in exchange for my honest opinion**

Review ~ Snowed In by Teodora Kostova

cropped-Rainbow-Header copy 5

Be careful what you wish for…

Nate has been in love with Quinn, his brother’s best friend, for as long as he can remember. But when he finally gets the chance to show Quinn how he feels, his heart gets broken in the most unexpected way.
Second chances come when you least expect them…
Quinn doesn’t believe in miracles, especially not Christmas ones. When he decides to win Nate back he knows it won’t be easy. The last thing he expects is a health scare, a road trip and a vicious snow storm to work in his favor.
In the end, a cabin in the woods turns out to be not only the shelter they desperately need, but also Quinn’s very own Christmas miracle.
Sometimes, to forgive, you need to get snowed in…

**stand-alone novella, 110 pages, not connected to any series
** lots of sexual content. You’ve been warned.

teaser_01 copy

cropped-Rainbow-Header copy 33*

I love the idea of two hot guys being snowed in and trapped inside a log cabin over Christmas.

My main issue throughout the story was the lack of communication between Nate and Quinn. For two people who’d supposedly been crushing on each other for years and had fallen in love, they didn’t make much of an effort to salvage their relationship. Even before the story began, neither of them had contacted the other while Quinn had been away at college for the past year.

The story starts in the summer and I was a little bewildered because Nate and Quinn weren’t alone and planned to share the cabin with other people. I liked Nate’s anticipation of seeing Quinn again and their early interaction in the story. They managed to get their smexy first time together and finally confessed their love for each other.

And then Quinn drops a bomb. He leaves Nate without any explanation and there’s no contact between them for two years. And yet they both still love each other. If you can accept this and the implausible reason Quinn finally gives then this story might work for you. But this is the main crux of the novella and everything hinges on it.

When they finally get back together and Quinn has a chance to explain his past actions, they find themselves trapped in the cabin for a snowy and sexy Christmas.

I normally enjoy Teodora’s writing style and there are some lovely scenes in this story, but overall, I thought the novella was rushed.

Hi, my name is Teodora and I live in London with my husband and my son. I’ve been writing ever since I can remember, but it became my full time job a few years ago when I decided that everything else I’ve tried bores me to death and I have to do what I’ve always wanted to do, but never had the guts to fully embrace. I’ve been a journalist, an editor, a personal assistant and an interior designer among other things, but as soon as the novelty of the new, exciting job wears off, I always go back to writing. Being twitchy, impatient, loud and hasty are not qualities that help a writer, because I have to sit alone, preferably still, and write for most of the day, but I absolutely love it. It’s the only time that I’m truly at peace and the only thing I can do for more than ten minutes at a time – my son has a bigger attention span than me.
When I’m procrastinating, I like to go to the gym, cook Italian meals (and eat them), read, listen to rock music, watch indie movies and True Blood re-runs. Or, in the worst case scenario, get beaten at every Nintendo Wii game by a kid.

“NO. NO, Bob, listen to me. Bob, listen to me. Yes. No. Yes. Bob. Bob. Calm down.”

I turn off the tap, shake my hands over the sink, and reach for towel as I listen to the one-sided conversation drifting through from the next room. I don’t really know why I’m surprised. It’s not as if this hasn’t happened a hundred times before. Richard and I will make plans, and then that damn phone of his will vibrate, emitting the inane, grimace-inducing ringtone I’ve never been able to stand, and everything will unravel.

Richard and I met at a Christmas party five years ago, just before he started his job at Robert Preston & Associates. To date, that was the one and only Christmas we’ve managed to spend together. Every year since, something work-related has called him away. He does his best to make it home for dinner on my birthday, which falls during the holidays, but even that is touch-and-go. Some years I’ve ended up celebrating alone, surrounded by fast-cooling, half-eaten slices of pizza and a pile of empty beer cans.

For months I’ve been begging him for this overseas trip. We’ve been going through a tough patch, and I thought spending the holidays together—without interruptions, just the two of us—would go a long way toward healing the rift. I’d held out hope that the distances involved would grant us some measure of security, that the fact that we were out of the country would make Bob think twice before dialing. But it appears I was wrong.

The trials and tribulations of the crew and passengers of interplanetary transport vessel, The Santa Claus continues in A Cook’s Tale.

After a horrific breakup, Erron Murfin is bitter, homeless, and friendless. When the cook’s position on the Santa Claus presents itself, Erron decides to escape his current circumstances and join the crew. On board he reconnects with family friend Gamin Wells, whose own secrets and issues begin to surface upon Erron’s arrival. The least of which is the reason the pair haven’t laid eyes on one another in over twelve years.

As Erron settles into his new duties, the men on board take an interest in their newest crew member. Among those intrigued by Erron are polyamorous couple, Barrus and James. Despite Erron’s cautious nature, he’s drawn into a triad relationship with the pair.

But there’s something about Gamin…

Is Erron too damaged to confront his own feelings?

Will his past prevent him from finding what he needs?

cropped-Rainbow-Header copy 6

Beta Deck was situated like a large dormitory. All the rooms ran in a loop with a central facility containing a gymnasium, lockers, lavatories, and shower room. On a non-hetero vessel, the layout was dubious to say the least.

Since the majority of the crew was off-ship, Erron felt bold enough to enter the locker room. In his quarters, he’d stalled for a bit, deciding how to proceed. What was considered normal on the Santa Claus? Did the men walk around half-dressed? Less than half? There were a lot of factors in fitting into an established community. Towel over his shoulder, he stepped through the doorway into the locker room. The gymnasium could be seen down one end and the shower room was visible down the other. He wondered what it would be like with a dozen men all stripping down and showering together in one room together. The likelihood for something tawdry to happen seemed high.

Gamin’s clothes lay over the bench and the sound of water running told Erron the chef beat him here. Not surprising really, Gamin had been on the ship for years, this was his home, and Erron hoped he’d soon feel the same.

Stripping off, Erron dropped his garments in the same fashion as Gamin. Peeling off his briefs, he felt a sudden surge of awkwardness. He was about to get in the shower with Gamin. The nervous giggle tried to rip out of his mouth, so he choked it down. He was being childish.

“Took you long enough,” Gamin said. The chef hadn’t looked in Erron’s direction as he held his head under the spray.

“I had to find my towel.”

Erron hung his towel on the hook near the doorway, and selected a shower with a buffer of one nozzle between them. The control panel beeped as Erron touched it, but nothing happened. Over and over, he touched the pad only to be mocked by the same tone.

“It’s voice activated,” Gamin said, barely looking over his shoulder. “Just tell it the temperature you want.” Erron’s face heated up; he couldn’t bring himself to admit he couldn’t muster the nerve to use the shower last night after they turned in. The ship was too quiet, and too new.

Ducking his head slightly, Erron leaned forward and spoke to the black panel. “Forty- two degrees Celsius.” A torrent of heated water rushed over Erron, the delicious heat the first step in washing away what felt like months of grime and sad reminders of his derailed life. The cheap inns he’d been forced to rent after being evicted had lousy facilities. This… this was a small piece of chocolate decadence.

“Like your showers pretty hot?” Gamin continued to face the wall as he soaked himself.

Erron angled his hips, keeping his privates out of view. “I’d forgotten how nice it feels.”

For the first time he could remember, Erron felt self-conscious. The fitness membership expired shortly after the breakup, but Erron hadn’t lost too much tone. He’d never be large and imposing, his frame didn’t allow it. A lean body and smooth skin could still turn heads. The treatment responsible for his hair growing in green made all the rest on his body the same color. Jade colored hair on his arms and legs was too odd and a green pubic zone made him feel like a perverted clown, so it had to go. There was nothing wrong with him, but why he felt the need to hide himself, he couldn’t say. He certainly never acted this shy in front of the troops during the war. It was more than a bit hypocritical when he peered over his shoulder at his showering partner.

Tall and thick, with coarse hair on his arms and legs, Gamin’s size and sturdiness were a stark contrast to Erron’s smaller stature. Wisps of fur reached around the sides of the chef’s rounded belly that matched the meaty globes of his behind. Everything about Gamin was solid and manly. The peppering of gray on his head and beard fit him as well.

It was true, he probably shouldn’t be looking, but Erron had never seen Gamin this way in all these years. Not even shirtless at the park when he was growing up. From what he could see, the view wasn’t half bad; Gamin had nothing to be ashamed of. What he did notice was how deliberate Gamin was being at not looking at him.

“You’re a lot bigger than I remembered.” Erron couldn’t help watching Gamin soap his body while continuing to face the wall. It had been a long time since he’d had any opportunity to be with a man. While it wasn’t his plan to be with Gamin, as long as he didn’t turn around, Erron could enjoy the show. He prayed Gamin wouldn’t turn around. That would be mortifying.

“Yeah well, I’ve had time to eat a few good meals.”

“It looks good on you.”

Gamin chuckled as lines of lazy suds followed the contours of his back and between the crevice of his haunches. “Thanks. You’ve changed a lot over the years too.”

“I’m not a kid anymore.”

“No. No, you’re not,” Gamin said, drenching his head under the spray.

Like many gay men, when MANN RAMBLINGS grew up, there weren’t any heroes he could relate to. The world held him back while he tried futilely to hide the real person inside. So much has changed since those hollow days. He finally found his voice, the voice that says it’s all right to revel in the so-called inappropriate joys, laughs, and loves that storm inside a man’s head. It took a long time to find that courage and now that it’s here, he plans to use it well.

While spending years more focused on visual arts, he never let go of his innate passion for storytelling—he wanted to write and draw comic books when he grew up. Once he discovered M/M fiction, a whole new world opened with new possibilities. Why couldn’t you have fantastic and dynamic tales with an M/M cast? He started reading the online tales of authors like, Night Tempest, Rob Colton, and Alicia Nordwell, which only fueled within him the need to create. Eventually he found, and with a little coercive nudge from Night Tempest, started sharing his tales with an unexpected level of positive response. That experience and support gave him the courage to cross his fingers and aim for the world of M/M publishing.

Born and raised in Michigan, Mann Ramblings continues to type away, wishing it was practical to use a noisy, old fashioned keyboard that clacks with each strike, if only to annoy his loving partner and spoiled miniature dachshund.
