Without You

Lily G Blunt

Previously published, newly revised by author.

“I miss you so much, Nathan.” Jasper’s voice echoes across the sparsely furnished living room.

Yet another afternoon had been spent slumped in their favorite two-seater sofa with no one to hear his cries of pain and anguish, or to console him in his grief. Without Nathan beside him, he is desperately cold and lonely. The house they once shared seems to reflect his sorrow, and doesn’t offer him any comfort in return.

Jasper knows he should move on, but he can’t, not just yet. This is the home where he spent many years living happily with Nathan.

In his usual dream-like state, Jasper’s fingers trace the patterns on the arm of their comfy sofa. If he closes his eyes, he knows he could imagine the arms of his loving partner wrapped around him, his lips brushing against his own, his body pressed close to his, full of need and desire. His life has been a blur for so long now, with too many lost hours spent recalling romantic moments they’d shared together.

Letting himself recall the past—how Nathan would caress him, and the numerous times he’d come undone under Nathan’s touch on this very sofa—was one indulgence Jasper allowed himself in the hope he’d feel close to his soul mate again. Obviously, it is nowhere like the real thing had ever been, but Jasper has no other choice now. Death cruelly separated the two friends… lovers… partners five long years ago. All he has left now are a few mementos scattered around their house, and memories of the times spent together.

Jasper’s misty eyes roam around the empty shell of a room. Large cardboard cartons are stacked in the corner, half-heartedly packed with his belongings. Numerous framed photographs are still in their designated places, waiting to join the rest of his possessions, but this final step is just too unbearable. The memories these pictures contain narrate their happy life together; each one telling a story, a captured moment in time, once experienced, but never to be repeated nor forgotten. Holidays, parties, days out, the two of them gazing at each other with looks of love and longing.

His life has become meaningless and empty without that one special person with which to share his life. No more conversations or laughs. No more kisses or gentle touches. No more intimate, sensual contact with Nathan ever to be experienced again. Jasper has indeed lost contact with everyone, for his family and friends have deserted him, too. He is completely alone in this Godforsaken world.

Although this story stands alone, there is a companion story.

About the author:

Taylin Clavelli lives in the United Kingdom, about 15 miles south of Birmingham, and a short journey from the world famous Cadbury’s Chocolate factory. She ís married with children and loves her family with all her heart.

Her love of books has been a long standing affair, with Taylin liking nothing better than to lose herself in an imaginary world.

Until she met Lily Velden, she never considered trying her hand at writing. However, after talking ideas, Lily encouraged her to put pen to paperóor rather, fingers to keyboard. Since, with a few virtual kicks in the right place, she hasnít stopped. Her confidence eventually led to her writing an original work for submission.

Her first published work was Boys, Toys, and Carpet Fitters, developed for the Dreamspinner Press Anthology, Don’t Try This At Home.

Now she absolutely adores immersing herself into the characters she creates, and transferring the pictures in her brain to paper, finding it liberating, therapeutic, and wonderful.

Outside of writing, her interests include; martial arts (she’s a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Taekwon-do), horse-riding, all of which facilitates her love of a wide variety of movies. Her action heroes include Jet Li and Tony Jaa, finding the dedication these men have for their art combined with their skill both amazing and a privilege to watch. If pressed, she’ll admit to thinking that the screen entrance of Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean, Curse of the Black Pearl, and Shadowfax in LOTR, to be the greatest screen entrances ever. Her all-time favorite movies are Star Wars and Lord of the Rings.

The simple things in life that make her day, putting a smile on her face are:

Laughter – especially that of her children.

The smell of lasagna cooking – it makes her mouth salivate.

The dawn chorus – no symphony ever written can beat the waking greetings of the birds.

Artist Casey Smith lives a quiet life, under the radar of his enemies, until one fateful night he loses control and the astonishing image of a wolf racing down a suburban street splashes all over social media.

Hunter’s bullet never misses its target. The assassin seeks out and kills his prey with a clear conscience by following two simple rules: 1) Don’t kill innocents 2) Don’t kill shifters.

Realizing his latest assignment violates those rules, the hunter activates Princess Protocol and the assassin becomes the protector. Red hot attraction flares between the hit man and his former target. Can Hunter resist the sweet shifter in his care?

He stepped closer to Casey’s stall but stumbled over something small and furry. The toe of one Birkenstock caught on a clump of grass as he attempted not to trample the little beast, and he ass-planted with said beast jumping onto his chest to give him a broad doggie smile.

His buddy laughed piss-your-pants-hard in his ear. Fuck a duck.

“Miss Priscilla!”

The target he’d worked so hard to observe remotely sank to the ground between his sprawled-out legs, peeling the tiny hairball off his chest and setting it on the ground.

“I’m so sorry! Are you okay?”

Big blue eyes fringed with long, pale lashes scanned his body while strong yet gentle hands moved over his ankles and legs, searching for an injury. Oh, a toucher. His wolf basked in the tactile attention. His breath hitched as those hands glided past his knees and skimmed his thighs.

Damn, he needed to get laid after this assignment.

“Oh, my, what a li’l sweetie. Look at those freckles! I wonder if he’s got them everywhere. I’d like to lick them,” Rex crowed in his ear.

He growled.

The other man chortled. “Possessive, much?”

He inhaled deeply, only to be slammed with the force of a Mack truck. Strawberries on a warm summer’s day and fresh-cut grass—shit, his target smelled delicious. He took another breath, and his brain reeled. He’s a wolf shifter, too? Fuck.

Casey’s brows furrowed. “Where are you hurt?”

He forced a smile. “I’m fine. No worries.”

Casey returned the smile, his wide and high beam combined with sparkling eyes. Hunter stared as warmth wrapped around him like a blanket. He had no ammo against such a happy, open expression. The guy freaking glowed.

Review of Paint the Sky

Many thanks to Sinfully Sexy Book Reviews.

Here’s Mark’s Review

Can love reform one’s behaviour? Well, this is definitely the case for Benjamin when he meets Vinnie who turns his world upside down. Until he meets Vinnie Benjamin’s idea of a relationship was a blowjob in the backroom of the local gay night club. Yes, Benjamin’s young, free, single and a bit of a man whore to be honest. I just loved the way that his attitude and behaviour transforms once he meets Vinnie at Uni. He falls heavily in love which makes him reconsider his way of life, realising how empty and unfulfilling his life has actually been until now. This had me reminiscing of when I was in my early twenties which feels like another lifetime, but with youth comes the self-confidence of being independent and the thought of being tied to someone forever a frightening thought. Until you meet the right person and then everything looks completely different. After a while you start to long for that person to wake up to in the mornings, knowing someone is next to you all night, every night. It really is something special even after all these years. Benjamin goes through the whole gamut of emotions during this book but comes out the other end the better person for it.

“I craved a best friend, someone to talk to and share my life as well as my bed. One-night hook ups had inexplicably lost their appeal.”

Vinnie is an art student and is more the shy and retiring kind of guy. He has been admiring Benjamin from afar for a while but never plucked up the courage to speak to him, also thinking that he wouldn’t be interested in him especially knowing what Benjamin is like. Vinnie had already been hurt before when jilted in a previous relationship and obviously is guarded with his emotions. If he’s going to give his heart to anyone he wants to make sure that it isn’t for a quickie and then left on the side. I loved Vinnie, such a caring but as is the nature of artists a sensitive soul who takes everything to heart.

When these two meet it was so sweet and even though Benjamin has fallen head over heels for Vinnie he still has to prove to Vinnie that he isn’t in it for a one night stand. I just loved the way that Vinnie plays him along at the beginning, making Benjamin work and prove himself worthy of a relationship, but once Vinnie lets the final barriers down these two guys just make one hot couple. I loved the way that Vinnie’s feelings, emotions and moods can be seen and viewed through his painting. I guess like any talented artist there is always a piece of themselves that is worked into every picture they paint and this is definitely the case for Vinnie.

“We never moved much beyond this – aroused and hard and grinding. Anything more and he would back off. We hadn’t talked about it yet. I knew we should, but I let it pass each time, fearful of making him runaway.”

They leave Uni and the normal daily drudge of work, job, etc. starts to creep into their relationship and as with anyone once the honeymoon period is over this is then the real test of a relationship. It’s make or break time. I liked this part as it is honest, realistic, no fancy, dreamy frills that you only get in a Mills and Boon romance. It’s down to the hard facts of life.

Vinnie is working on a job at a children’s hospital with another artist called James and jealously raises it’s ugly head on Benjamin’s side. OK, James from the very beginning for me was smarmy and detestable, but Vinnie seemed to like him and I could only take Benjamin’s side on this one. Vinnie starts arriving home late, never phones Benjamin to say he’ll be home later which would be the considerate thing to do. Benjamin starts to get jealous, the chinks in their relationship start to appear, everything escalates out of control until it comes to the inevitable and Vinnie storms out on Benjamin in rage, leaving him high, dry and alone. My heart went out to Benjamin to be honest though for several reasons.

Maybe Benjamin was behaving a little bit like a drama queen and behaving all jealous, but to be honest Vinnie gave him every reason to and didn’t make things better. I think there is nothing worse than expecting you’re loved one home at a certain time and he doesn’t appear. However, when he doesn’t even bother to ring you either to let you know he’ll be late, considering you might be worried sick wondering where he is, this in my books is a really shitty thing and shows total lack of consideration. Yep, totally on Benjamin’s side there! Once mistrust starts to build up it’s a very difficult thing to get out of the way. Benjamin is now so alone it’s heart-breaking. Having experienced this myself, as probably many of us have too, it really is a crappy time for anyone. In my case my worst fears were confirmed and that was then end of a seven year relationship which I thought was still OK. Silly, naive me – lol! This is why my heart was aching for Benjamin at this point, even as time goes by he still can’t get Vinnie out of his mind. Well, this does take time for sure that’s true as anyone who has been through this kind of breakup will know.

Vinnie takes off and stays with James not making things better and through all this Vinnie’s brothers Theo and Finn provide the biggest support for Benjamin. They know Vinnie is still pining for Benjamin, but neither Benjamin nor Vinnie are giving any ground or prepared to approach the other. It just always amazes me how stubborn people can be at times. The support from Vinnie’s brothers however was so heart-warming, I could just feel the love these brothers have for each other. Of course we also mustn’t forget the big older sister either who I reckon keeps her brothers all in order quietly anyway – lol! So four siblings all told and Vinnie is the baby. Well, the way he acts at time I must say he did have some very younger sibling qualities for sure.

The only thing I felt for me that went a bit over the top was the fact that during this time Finn, Vinnie’s older brother, comes out of the closet. We already know that Theo is bi but I got the impression he’s possibly a little more into men than the other way round. This was the point to be honest where my imagination was just stretched a little too far beyond the realms of credibility. Three brothers and they are all gay? Ah sorry, but realistically I don’t think so somehow. I have one younger brother, happily married who has a wonderful daughter which means I get a gorgeous niece to spoil and adore. I only have the one brother, he is supportive, my best friend and confidante, we joke around, but he’s straight as they come. Maybe two brothers out of three being gay, or another cousin, nephew, etc. OK, believable. But three brothers from three are gay? Even as a gay man myself, for me it just felt there was a little too much of the gay – lol! It is probably only me that had a few problems with the plausibility of this situation or plot device and maybe there are real situations where all brothers are gay when there is more than two, however statistically speaking I’m afraid I’m not really convinced. I’m always willing to be proved wrong for the better though, so please if anyone can enlighten me with a real situation then I would be more than delighted to hear about it. Always willing to live and learn. It didn’t however detach me from the story too much and once I just accepted the idea was totally invested in the book.

Let me however not distract you from what is only for me a personal minor small point in a story that truly is an emotional ride with a beautiful HEA. Needless to say without giving too much away, Benjamin has to be patient and he is which pays off as Vinnie is seriously not happy with James. Well, in the end the family had to get him away from the piece of shit that James is and bring him home in a cloak and dagger operation. Poor Vinnie I just felt so sorry for him, hurting, alone and in another relationship which was poisoning him slowly but surely. However, I guess it was exactly this that showed him how much he had with Benjamin despite the fact that nobody is perfect and Benjamin is by no means an exception either.

There are some harrowing moments for Benjamin to pull through and I could just feel his loneliness without Vinnie. It was truly upsetting for me to read how he was suffering from missing Vinnie, but at the same time clutching on to every last straw thrown his way that might eventually bring Vinnie back to him. His patience pays off and I was only glad and relieved to see how they gradually got back together to form a relationship that is now possibly stronger than it ever was before. This meant the book ended on a beautiful high point and that did produced a warm, gooey feeling inside.

Louise’s Story – One Snowy Night

Main character, Keith Brambles, is an up and coming British singer. He has had one disastrous first date after another, finding most men are only interested because of who he is. After yet another failed meeting, he sets off for home, driving too fast for the conditions. He loses control of his car in the snow and finds himself stranded – with no mobile phone signal and an outfit completely unsuitable for braving the freezing conditions.

Just as Keith has begun to think he’s destined to spend a night in his car, possibly suffering from hypothermia, a potential rescuer arrives, but Keith wonders whether he might have more to fear from the man, than the weather.

“You all right, mate?” a gruff voice asked.

“Y-y-y-yes,” Keith stammered. He was shivering so badly he doubted he could utter another word.

“No injuries?”

He shook his head in response.

“Can you get out?”

“I… d-d-d-d….” Keith meant to say I don’t know. He shoved the passenger door open and extended one leg, until his foot reached the snowy ground outside. He groaned as he tried to move the other leg. His knee was locked, and he couldn’t feel his foot at all.

“Fuck. Wait there.” The driver’s door slammed. Seconds later, the man appeared at the other side of the car. Large arms reached out and scooped Keith up. He clutched at the thick neck of his rescuer as he was plucked from the Audi and carried to a waiting white Transit van. White Van Man. Keith cringed, and hoped the man wouldn’t recognize him. His type probably wasn’t very tolerant. Then again, it wouldn’t really matter whether he knew who Keith was or not. Keith was wearing a purple silk shirt, heeled boots, earrings, and eye makeup. He thought his preference must be fairly obvious.

“There you go.” White Van Man managed to pull open the passenger side door of the van and hoist Keith up onto the seat without much effort. He slammed the door closed, went around the other side, and climbed behind the wheel.

The heating of the van was blowing at full blast. Keith leaned forward and placed his frozen hands over one of the vents. The interior of the vehicle was like a furnace, and he knew he would thaw out quickly, but painfully.

Louise Lyons Bio:

Louise Lyons comes from a family of writers. Her mother has a number of poems published in poetry anthologies, her aunt wrote poems for the church, and her grandmother sparked her inspiration with tales of fantasy. Louise first ventured into writing short stories at the grand old age of eight, mostly about little girls and ponies. She branched into romance in her teens, and MM romance a few years later, but none of her work saw the light of day until she discovered FanFiction in her late twenties.

Posting stories based on some of her favorite movies, provoked a surprisingly positive response from readers. This gave Louise the confidence to submit some of her work to publishers, and made her take her writing “hobby” more seriously.

Louise lives in the UK, about an hour north of London, with a mad Dobermann, and a collection of tropical fish and tarantulas. She works in the insurance industry by day, and spends every spare minute writing. She is a keen horse-rider, and loves to run long-distance. Some of her best writing inspiration comes to her, when her feet are pounding the open road. She often races into the house afterward, and grabs pen and paper to make notes.

Louise has always been a bit of a tomboy, and one of her other great loves is cars and motorcycles. Her car and bike are her pride and joy, and she loves to exhibit the car at shows, and take off for long days out on the bike, with no one for company but herself.

Many thanks, Louise. Tell us a little more about yourself.

The prized possession you value above all others:

My car. I have a Mitsubishi FTO GR, modified Japanese import. I won’t bore you with the specifications, but I could talk about my baby (affectionately named Ed) until the cows come home.

The temptation you wish you could resist:

Naughty food! I love to eat and I constantly have to restrict myself and exercise, or I’d be rather larger than I am. I’m a sucker for Haagen Dazs pralines and cream ice cream, Maryland Gooey’s cookies and nachos with a hot spicy dip. I comfort eat, even when there’s really no excuse and as it usually gives me a “food hangover”, I don’t do myself any favours at all. (Drooling here!)

The film you can watch time and time again:

Remember Me, starring Robert Pattinson. I must have watched it at least a dozen times in a year and it gets me every time. I bawl like a baby. I love the tortured character of Tyler Hawkins and I can remember the first time I ever watched it. It shows Tyler’s sister in school and her teacher is writing the date on the blackboard – 9/11. You just know what’s going to happen even if you’ve never seen it. I remember watching with huge round eyes and shouting at the TV, “No, no, no!” (One of my favorites too.)

The unlikely interest that engages your curiosity:

Anyone who’s seen any of the posts on my blog tour for my first novel, Conflicted (with Dreamspinner Press) will probably have heard this one. I’m a bit of a tomboy and one of my big loves is cars and motorcycles. I have a beautiful car which I exhibit at shows and also do a lot of my own maintenance and modifications on. I like nothing better than poking about in an engine well, up to the elbows in oil and grease!

The song that means the most to you:

“If Today Was Your Last Day” by Nickelback. The lyrics make my eyes prickle. It’s about making the most of life. I have “Carpe Diem” tattooed on my back which is basically the same message.

Your early recollections of writing fiction:

Learning to use my mother’s old manual typewriter when I was about 8 years old. I started writing stories about little girls with ponies and would see tapping away on the machine for hours, while my friends were out playing.

I started on het romances when I was in my early teens and watching the film “My Beautiful Laundrette” when I was 15 or 16 started my interest in M/M romance. I’ve never looked back.

The pet hate that makes your hackles rise:

Liars. There is no excuse whatsoever. I hate it. Liars are cowards and I could really get on my soap box about that particular subject. Suffice to say, woe betide anyone who tells me any fibs in the future! (I totally agree with you here, Louise. You need to be able to trust someone.)

Book Excerpt:

“Orin, I won’t.” Thomas stood a bit straighter and his eyes lost the sad, pleading shine. “I won’t hurt you again.”

“You can’t promise that. Things happen.” Orin watched as his words dragged Thomas back from the brink of hope.

“If you truly believe that, then there’s nothing I can do. You have to believe there’s a chance or else I can’t prove it.”

“That’s not what I’m telling you.” He locked his gaze on Thomas’s. “If I say yes, I’ll have to take down the walls I surrounded my heart with to keep it safe. Once it’s gone, I won’t be able bring it back if I get hurt. Not now.

“So what I’m saying is, think about what you’re asking me to risk. If you really love me, ask yourself if are you willing to risk what will happen to me if you can’t keep your promise.”

He knew how unfair he’d been, but self-preservation had been a skill he’d honed over the past fifteen years. He needed Thomas to know just how serious the repercussion could be for his actions.

“Orin, I . . . I . . . how . . .?” Their faces were inches apart, and Thomas moved in for another kiss.

This felt different than the first—less urgent, but no less intense. Orin trembled at the leap he was about to take. When they stepped back, Thomas rubbed his thumb across Orin’s cheek.

“I do love you, Orin. More than I can say. So much, that I’m not willing to risk what will happen if I fail you again. I don’t have that right.”

Thomas’s lips quivered and the tears welled at the bottom of his eyes. He kissed Orin’s forehead gently.

“Good-bye, Orin. Please be happy.” Without looking back, Thomas walked to the front door, opened it, and walked away.

Author Bio:

Andrew Q. Gordon wrote his first story back when yellow legal pads, ball point pens were common and a Smith Corona correctable typewriter was considered high tech. Adapting with technology, he now takes his MacBook somewhere quiet when he wants to write.

He currently lives in the Washington, D.C. area with his partner of eighteen years, their young daughter and dog. In addition to dodging some very self-important D.C. ‘insiders’, Andrew uses his commute to catch up on his reading. When not working or writing, he enjoys soccer, high fantasy, baseball and seeing how much coffee he can drink in a day.
